Newtown High School’s girls’ and boys’ basketball teams squared off with South-West Conference foes Notre Dame-Fairfield on January 18.

The boys were home and topped the Lancers 80-48.

Tucker Garrity poured in 23 points, Robert DiSibio had 17, Riley Ward 13, and Jack Kuligowski 11 to lead the Nighthawks. Kuligowski made three of Newtown’s seven 3-pointers.

Jack Petersen had seven points and Todd Petersen added three.

The NHS boys remain unbeaten at 10-0 overall and 4-0 in the SWC. Notre Dame, last year’s Division I state champions, slipped to 6-5 and 2-2.

On the road, the NHS girls suffered their second loss of the campaign, and first in conference and state. The Lancers prevailed 61-53.

Newtown’s scoring was well-distributed. Shea Murphy led with nine points, and Nicki DaPra, Rebecca Alicea, and Carlie Smith each had eight. Emma Magazu scored seven, and Cyleigh Wilson had five, and Amy Sapenter and Jackie Matthews both added four.

The Hawks were 15-for-17 from the free throw line.

The Lancers improved to 11-1 (6-0) and the Hawks fell to 10-2 (5-1).
