WINTERTHUR HOSTS ANNUAL FURNITURE FORUM IN MARCH w/no cuts

WINTERTHUR, DEL. — A special three-day seminar “Yankee Cabinetmakers: New Scholarship on Old Furniture,” will take place at Winterthur, March 3–5.

On Thursday and Friday, independent scholars and museum professionals will discuss new discoveries and research that present a more complete picture of the production of furniture in Connecticut, Rhode Island and eastern Massachusetts in the Seventeenth, Eighteenth and early Nineteenth centuries. Thursday afternoon will feature the first Robert Francis Fileti endowed lecture/demon-stration, named for the late conservator and authenticator of Eighteenth and Nineteenth Century furniture. A reception in memory of Fileti follows, with a tribute by Leigh Keno, antiques dealer and co-host of the PBS television show Find!

Saturday features a morning of optional workshops. Three will focus on the specific regions of Connecticut, Rhode Island and eastern Massachusetts. A fourth will cover New England furniture “fakes.” Each program will be presented twice (9 and 11 am).

Speakers and workshop leaders include Dennis Carr, doctoral candidate, Yale University; Patricia E. Kane, Friends of American Arts curator, American decorative arts, Yale University; Josh Lane, assistant curator of furniture, Historic Deerfield; Alice Kugelman and Thomas P. Kugelman, independent scholars; Robert Lionetti, furniture restorer and consultant; Susan P. Schoelwer, director of museum collections, Connecticut Historical Society; and Kemble Widmer II, independent scholar.

In addition, Winterthur staff members Mark Anderson, furniture conservator; Wendy A. Cooper, Lois F. and Henry S. McNeil senior curator of furniture; Patricia A. Halfpenny, director of museum collections; Brock W. Jobe, professor of American decorative arts; Gregory J. Landrey, director of conservation; and Michael Podmaniczky, senior furniture conservator, will also inform participants.

CLEVELAND, OHIO —Cleveland Museum of Art Director Katharine Lee Reid announced the appointment of Dr Mark Cole, curator of American art at the Columbus Museum of Art, as new associate curator of American painting and sculpture, effective February 7.

“Dr Cole’s depth of knowledge, along with his diverse range of interests and his scholarship in American art make him a very suitable addition to our curatorial staff,” Reid said. “We are impressed with his energy, experience and demonstrated ability to connect diverse segments of the population with art.”

Cole, who earned the bachelor’s degree in chemistry from John Carroll University in 1984, also earned an MA in art history and museum studies from Case Western Reserve University in 1989. In 1999, he earned a PhD from the University of Delaware where he specialized in early Twentieth Century American painting.

Cole has lectured and published on a variety of topics in Nineteenth and Twentieth Century American art. While a research assistant at CMA, Cole published “‘I, Too, Am America’: Karamu House and African American Artists in Cleveland,” an essay in the exhibition catalog Transformations in Cleveland Art, 1796–1946, as well as “Community and Diversity in Early Modern America,” Ohio University Press, 1996.
