Newtown High School’s wrestling team, following a 48-33 win over host Bunnell of Stratford on January 23, competed at the Fairfield Warde Duals two days later.

Ayden Kasbarian, Nik Accousti, Joe Zeller, and Andrew Sayers all went 3-0 in the Warde Duals.

Greg Gargano, Justin Bogdanoff, and Sebastian Vona all made major contributions in Newtown’s 46-30 upset victory over Enfield. The Nighthawks had finished in 11th place at the Eagle Classic while Enfield won the tournament the weekend before.

“They’ve had many quality wins throughout the season, so they were a tough team to beat. It took a full team effort and commitment. They really don’t have any holes in their lineup,” Newtown Coach Ron Chivinski said.

Newtown also lost to Foran of Milford 55-16 and Fairfield Warde, which Chivinski noted is among the top-ranked teams in the state, 51-26. He was pleased with the effort.

“Clearly, they have more firepower, but all of our wrestlers pushed their opponents. Fritz Maurath battled with one of the tougher 145-pound wrestlers in the state, Cole Shaughnessy, falling 6-3. It was much closer than they were expecting, that’s for sure. Fritz is going to be a tough matchup for anyone heading into the postseason,” Chiviniski said.

The NHS-New Milford scheduled for Wednesday was postponed to Thursday, February 7 at 7 pm. NHS will host Barlow February 4 at 7.
