Alzheimerâs Support,
AARP Safe Driving Course
SOUTHBURY â An open and on-going support group for friends and family of people with Alzheimerâs disease and related dementias is being offered by Brownstein Jewish Family Service and the Lutheran Home of Southbury. The next meeting is Thursday, May 8, at 1:30 pm, in the library at the Federation, Jewish Communities of Western Connnecticut, 444 Main Street North.
Facilitator Edie Hardwick, program manager for the Scattering the Clouds Program of the Lutheran Home in Southbury, explained, âThis will be a time for people dealing with these issues to get together to meet, share concerns, get to know one another, learn how to deal with certain problems and receive support from each other.â
Ms Hardwick noted that Scattering the Clouds, an outreach service of the Lutheran Home, offers free education and care management to families who have a loved one with dementia.
In other news, the AARP Driver Safety Course is being offered Wednesdays, May 14 and 21, from 9 am until 1 pm at the Federation.
May is AARP Driver Safety Program Month, and their âBring a Friendâ Promotion entitles AARP members to bring a friend, spouse, family member, or neighbor to an AARP Driver Safety Program classroom course, for free â just $10 for the two âa 50 percent savings.
Both attendees will receive a certificate upon successful completion of the course, where participants will learn safe driving practices. In Connecticut, individuals over 60 qualify for an insurance discount of at least five percent.
There are no physical, written, or on-the-road driving tests and no reports to government agencies, health insurers, or physicians. To receive this special offer, the AARP members must show their AARP membership card upon arrival on the first day of the course.
Participants are encouraged to register early, as class size is limited.
