Track And Field Competitors Shine In State Meet

Newtown High School’s indoor track and field teams had some standout performances during the Class LL state championship meet at Floyd Little Athletic Center in New Haven on February 9.

The Nighthawk girls placed 16th with 11 points; Danbury was first with 74. On the boys’ side, NHS came in 19th with 2.33 points; Hall of West Hartford was first with 60.

Top-five finishes included third- and fourth-place pole vault efforts by Katie Ryan and Aidan Jasinski, Audrey Benson's fourth-place result in the 55 meter hurdles, Ally McCarthy's fifth-place outcome in the 600.

Newtown's top results, in order of event, are as follows:

Brianna Lovely was 15th in the 55 meter dash in a time of 7.81.

In the 300-meter dash, Elise Barricelli was ninth in a time of 44.87, and Laura Wong was 12th in 45.21.

Ally McCarthy came in fifth in the 600, clocking in at 1:40.49, and Sophia Guevara was 11th in 1:46.56.

Emily Tressler came in 11th in the 3200, finishing in 11:59.58.

Audrey Benson placed fourth in the 55 meter hurdles in a time of 9.26.

Newtown’s 4x200 relay of Lovely, Victoria Moran, Amelia Daly, and Wong was 11th in 1:54.10. The 4x400 team of Wong, Maddie Fetchick, Katie Rowan, and Daly placed 12th in 4:32.33. The 4x800 team of Tressler, Guevara, Ella Hage, and McCarthy placed eighth in 10:09.98. The 1600 sprint medley relay of Lovely, Moran, Barricelli, and McCarthy was seventh in 4:30.62.

Katie Ryan came in third in the pole vault competition, clearing the bar at 10 feet. Ryan was 14th in the long jump with a leap of 14-07.

Thomas Hartley placed tenth in the 55 hurdles in 8.57.

The 4x200 relay comprising William Hornby, Zachary Majeski, Neil Coppola, and Connor Breslin came in 14th in a time of 1:39.80. Newtown’s 4x400 team of Ben Albee, Jonathan Nahmias, Hornby, and Tristan Andrew was 11th in 3:45.87. The 4x800 relay of Evan Hildenbrand, Andrew Poseno, Matthew Sortino, and Justin Halmose was 13th in 9:01.79.

In the pole vault competition, Aidan Jasinski tied finished in a fourth place tie, clearing 12 feet.
