Senior Boys

Ridgefield Black 10, Newtown Gold 5 – Christian Beitel had two goals and one assist as Newtown suffered its first loss of the year to one of the top 7th/8th grade teams in the state. Andrew Hyland was brilliant in goal – his eight saves kept Newtown’s hopes alive until the final horn. Kyle O’Connor had two assists from his midfield position, while Kevin Canavan, Jamie Vavrek and Tim Wheeler also scored. Connor Collier had an assist. Defensively, Hyland and close defensemen John Grimaldi, Kyle McNamara, John Aminti, Chris Murphy, and Zach Conger were supremely challenged to stem the onslaught from Ridgefield.

Trumbull (7A) 5, Newtown White 4 (OT) – Andrew Golankiewicz had a goal and an assist in the loss while Cameron Gehrman, Jamie Bowers and Dylan Heubner each had goals. Kurt Nacewicz had an assist and Andrew Matsis made nine saves. Newtown had the advantage in ground balls (30-24) and shots (34-21), but lost the faceoff war 10-3.

Newtown Gold 10, Guilford A 2 – Kevin Canavan scored four goals and Christian Beitel had three goals and an assist as Newtown’s Senior Gold team ran its record to 10-0 on the season. Connor Collier had three assists, Tim Wheeler and Jamie Vavrek, and Mack Fuller each had a goal and an assist. Matt Hill and Kyle O’Connor assisted on goals. Defensively, the “Super 6” – led by keepers Andrew Hyland (eight saves) and Christian Beitel (three saves) – shutout Guilford in the second half and limited the opponent to but two first half goals. Longsticks Zach Conger, John Grimaldi, John Aminti , Kyle McNamara and Chris Murphy kept the Guilford offense in check throughout the night. Newtown out shot its opponent, 32-21.

Newtown Gold 10, RELAX Black 4 – Mack Fuller scored three goals and Jacob Dauz scored a goal and had three assists as Newtown gained a hard fought win over Redding-Easton. Andrew Hyland made 9 saves behind some consistently solid defense. Midfielders Kyle O’Connor, Henry Sims, Kenton Lord and Zach Conger (in a new long stick middie role) played well. Connor Collier had two goals, Christian Beitel and Matt Hill each had a goal and an assist, Kevin Canavan and Jaime Vavrek scored goals, and Tim Wheeler, John Grimaldi, and Lord all registered assists.

Brookfield Blue 4, Newtown Blue 2 – The Newtown offense was unable to capitalize on stellar play from their defense and goalie as the Senior Blues lost another close one. Clarence Cheung made eleven saves and Nick Pierettii played superbly at close defense. Tim Dalton and Aaron Caldwell scored the goals and Colby Gleacher had an assist. Michael Locorotondo, Kevin Read and Dylan Kelleher were strong on D.

Junior Boys

Ridgefield Orange 8, Newtown Blue 7 (OT) – The Junior Blues suffered a tough overtime loss despite 18 saves from goalie Louis Raab and three goals each from Michael Lord and Matthew Vavrek. Scott Wexler also scored for Newtown. Joe Pieretti and Thomas Diluoffo played well at the midfield position. James Radcliffe, Brendan McNamara, and Will Fletcher played well at attack. Drew Seymour and Dan Sclafani were keys on defense.

Newtown Gold 6, Redding-Easton Gold 4 – John Johnson scored two goals, and Will Fletcher, Michael Lord, Matthew Vavrek, and Colin Morris each scored one goal to lead Newtown to the win. Joe Pieretti, Eric Johnson, Emmett White, and Dan Sclafani played strong defense. Cody Fisher played well on attack. Dave Kreshpan, Andrew Cebry, and Josh Gilbert played well from the midfield.

Newtown Gold 4, Redding-Easton Black 2 – Brandon Body made 14 saves and the close defense of Max Nacewicz, Will Northrop, Justin Brophy and Jeremy Schaniel shut down the RELAX offense to send the Junior Golds to 10-0 on the season. Kyle Vignone scored two goals and Lewis Thompson scored a goal and had an assist. Good midfield play by Trey Trudell, Mike Zaccaro and Thomas Murphy were keys to Newtown’s win. Justin Spath and Sean Maher fought hard for ground balls, and Evan Gilchrist was his usual sure-handed self on attack.

Newtown Gold 8, Ridgefield A 7 – Newtown was in front by 8-3 with just over two minutes left in the third quarter, then had to withstand a furious Ridgefield comeback to seal the win. Brandon Body made 10 saves and CJ Ryan scored four goals from his crease attack position. Kyle Vignone had three goals, scooped eight ground balls, and won four face-offs. Justin Brophy had seven ground balls from his close defense position and Lewis Thompson controlled Newtown’s offense from behind the cage, gobbled up seven ground balls and notched a goal and an assist. Trey Trudell scooped nine ground balls and had two assists. Willie Provey and Connor Byrne each had an assist.
