The Board of Selectmen has scheduled a second budget referendum for Wednesday, June 18, after resident Edwin Baumer forced the referendum by turning in a petition with more than the required 535 signatures. Mr Baumer is calling for further spending cuts and a reduction in the proposed tax rate.

Parks and Recreation Director Barbara Kasbarian says the town may have to increase the salaries for the lifeguards at the Dickinson pool if it’s going to continue to attract qualified applicants. Last summer the head lifeguard received $5 an hour, while the assistant head lifeguard got $4.75. Under the proposed town budget for the fiscal year beginning July 1, those salaries would be increased by 25-cents an hour.

Only someone who hates parties wouldn’t want to be in Newtowner Jim Davis’ topsiders this Fourth of July. As one of the 15 crew members of the legendary Shamrock V, Davis will be in the Tall Ships’ parade down the Hudson River and into New York harbor, where the refurbished Statue of Liberty will be the center of attention. On May 19, the Shamrock V glided into the harbor after a historic crossing of the Atlantic. Shamrock V is the same yacht that challenged for the America’s Cup in 1930 under Sir Thomas Lipton, the Irish tea merchant.

June 16, 1961

Connecticut’s more than 8,000 farmers can now obtain a telephone system especially designed for the farm. Introduced recently by the Southern New England Telephone Company, the new communications system is called “Farm Interphone.” A convenient timesaver for the busy farmer, it ties the entire farm operation together by telephone.

It has come to the attention of the Building Department of the town of Newtown that there are several out of town contractors and some part-time residents doing work without first obtaining permits. In most cases this is done due to a lack of knowledge that a building code exists. However, after a building code has been in effect for two and a half years, it would seem highly improbable that a person would not be aware of it.

Seventy-seven seniors from Newtown High School will take part in Commencement exercises to be held at the Edmond Town Hall next Thursday evening, June 22, at 8 pm. Dr Ruth Haas, president of Danbury State College, will give the commencement address.

Homeowners who live on or near Pond Brook have formed a Pond Brook Homeowners Association to seek to clear the brook of pollution and to prevent contamination in the future. The brook, long a fine trout stream, has suffered mud contamination.

 

June 12, 1936

Those who have occasion to use the Newtown-Bethel road are increasingly pleased with the development at William Mackenzie’s Key Rock Gardens. It is a pleasant surprise to every motorist who rounds the bend in the road. Those who have not seen these gardens should stop by sometime.

A six-inch main is being laid from the main at Sunset Tavern northward to the Currituck section by the Newtown Water Company, in order that the residents of that district will have better water pressure. Almost one-half mile of piping will be laid.

Mr and Mrs John W. Leahy were passengers on the new Canard liner, Queen Mary, on its maiden eastward voyage across the Atlantic, sailing form New York, Friday morning. Mr and Mrs Leahy will visit Great Britain, Ireland and France.

The Dodgingtown Fire apparatus which has been in Providence, R.I., being equipped with a combination chemical and pumper, was returned to the Dodgingtown fire headquarters on Friday afternoon. The truck is now equipped with a 450- gallon booster tank, pump, spot light and other improvements. The firemen feel that they are now prepared for most any emergency.

 

June 16, 1911

O.E. Morgan of Hattertown has had his boats at his pond newly painted and they are in first class condition to let to parties who may wish to go fishing. The fishing is good this season and parties who go there always come away with a good catch.

NEW ICE CREAM AND CONFECTIONERY STORE, In The Former Rooms of the Newtown Savings Bank: R.H. Beers & Co have redecorated in handsome style the old bank rooms and will open an up-to-date ice cream and confectionery parlor. He is installing one of the new and up-to-date soda water fountains. Mr Beers will have everything about the new store first class.

Work on the Castle (Ronald) proper is nearing completion. Dr Gladman, who has leased the Castle for five years, is coming on Saturday and hopes to have it in running order by July 1. Noted physicians say there will be no sanitarium like this in the world. The successful treatment of obesity, which is common to all periods of life, is constantly appealing to the physician.
