NHS Cheerleaders Collecting Footwear For Haiti Works! At Football Game

Newtown High School’s varsity cheerleading team members are collecting gently used work shoes, work boots, and hiking boots to donate to Haiti Works in an effort to assist the people of Petionville, Haiti. The cheerleaders ask fans to bring donated shoes to the Newtown High’s football game against Masuk of Monroe on November 24 at 7 pm — scheduled to be the first game played at the renovated Blue and Gold Stadium, and also the South-West Conference championship game. The varsity cheerleaders will have boxes set up for shoe/boot donations.

There are more than 100,000 people in the city of Petionville and for almost a year they have been walking in bare feet on rocks and debris and living in tents following damage caused by an earthquake this year. The President of Haiti Works!, Pierre d’Haiti, lives in Bridgeport, but grew up in Petionville and d’Haiti would like to re-build his hometown and would like the people of Haiti as well as volunteers from the United States to help, said NHS cheerleader Samantha Rochrbacher, who is spearheading the collection efforts. The NHS cheerleaders are also collect funds to help with shipping costs. Donations may be made online at www.haiti-works.org.
