SCAN To Welcome Clayton Buchanan

For Pastel Demo At Meeting House

The Society of Creative Arts of Newtown (SCAN) will welcome Clayton Buchanan of Newburg, N.Y., for a demonstration of creating a still life with pastels, on Wednesday, February 22.

Mr Clayton’s program is open to the public and will be offered in the lower meeting room of Newtown Meeting House, 31 Main Street in Newtown. It will begin at 1:30 pm.

Clayton Buchanan paints those pieces of nature that speak to him through light, color, structure, and emotion. He has been fascinated with the Impressionist color concept for over 35 years and is still visually learning from nature. Looking for moments that come and go with a blink of an eye, he says, are a challenge for him to capture.

Many of his figurative paintings are those moments, frozen in time, that capture life in movement, offering viewers a chance to recognize the fleeting beauty of light and color so easily lost forever.

Mr Buchanan’s paintings are in private and corporate collections including the Elizabeth T. Greenshields Memorial Foundation, Montreal, Canada; and Northern Dutchess Hospital, Rhinebeck, N.Y.

He has done numerous portrait commissions throughout the Northeast and South and is currently conducting demonstrations and workshops.  He received Best in Show, Connecticut Pastel Society Annual Member Show, 2011, and has won additional awards on a regional and national level.

Mr Buchanan holds memberships in the Guild of Boston Artists, Connecticut Pastel Society, Kent Art Association, and Orange County Art Federation, N.Y. He studied Impressionist Painting with Henry Hensche in Provincetown, Mass.; and figure/portrait painting with William Draper at Art Students League, N.Y.  He has his studio in Newburgh, NY.

Reservations are not needed for SCAN programs but information is always available from Ruth Newquist, who can be reached by calling 203-426-6654.
