The Animal Center is a volunteer-staffed charity that is seeking volunteers to provide foster homes for kittens; handy people to build feral cat shelters; and crafty people to make cat beds and cat toys. Contact Monica Roberto at 270-0228.
Canine Advocates of Newtown is in need of volunteers over the age of 21 to walk dogs at the Newtown Dog Pound. Volunteers are also needed to put up fliers, assist with publicity, and to help with fundraising projects. Contact Virginia Jess at 426-5327.

Golden Opportunities needs people who would commit at least two hours per month to visit isolated and/or lonely individuals, primarily residents of eldercare facilities. Newtown Friends of Booth Library has an ongoing need for volunteers to help sort books and prepare for the annual book sale. New volunteers are always welcome. Call Mari Maki at 426-3889 to volunteer.
Newtown Labor Day Parade Committee needs committee members who would be involved in booking and arranging the parade lineup for the September 2008 parade. Newtown Meals on Wheels seeks volunteer drivers to pick up and deliver noontime meals to housebound residents in the area. Call Colleen Honan at 426-0714 to volunteer.
Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps is seeking volunteers. While emergency medical certification is required to ride the ambulances, noncertified volunteers can assist in various positions. Medic truck drivers are needed and do not need to be certified. Applications can be filled out at the ambulance garage on Main Street.
An experienced grant writer to volunteer their expertise is also sought by the Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps. Call the garage at 270-4380 to volunteer.
Newtown Youth and Family Services is always in need of adult and youth volunteers to assist with mailings and other office work. Newtown Youth and Family Services is located at 10 Glen Road; or call 270-4335.
Pootatuck Watershed Association, Inc and Trout Unlimited have a number of ongoing projects for which volunteers are needed. Teenage volunteers and older are needed to help with macro-invertebrate sampling in the fall. To volunteer for any project, call James Belden at 426-6538.
RSVP of Northern Fairfield County (Retired Seniors Volunteer Program) welcomes volunteers aged 55 and over. RSVP reinvests the knowledge, skills, and talents of senior citizens back into the community through various volunteer opportunities. Contact Maureen Farrell at 792-8200.
