Newtown Markettes Dance Team Win SWC Championship
The Newtown High School Markette Dance Team took first place at the 4th annual SWC Dance Team
Championship. The championship was held at New Milford High School on March 29 and seven area dance teams participated. The Markette captains are Katy Caulfield, Mia Malin and Sam Ross.
The Markettes have been in existence for more than 25 years and have a rich tradition in dance. They perform at various events throughout the school year including the Labor Day Parade, home varsity football and basketball games and spirit week. They are a student-run organization that takes pride in coming up with their own hip hop and jazz choreography. Unlike other high school teams the Markettes do not have professional coaches or dance school teacher/owner alliances. This past summer they held their dance camp at The Performing Arts Center of Connecticut. They were taught by highly-trained dance professionals and educators, many from New York City.
With the guidance of their advisor, Kerry Pawlyk, the captains and team members are responsible for organizing fundraisers to financially support their yearly activities, selecting their outfits, mixing their music and ultimately creating a unified, high performing dance team.
