Skating To The Top — Newtown Hockey Players Earn Gold In Lake Placid

Philip Makris and Liam Gelston, both of Newtown, along with Assistant Coach Tim Makris, won the gold medal at the Can/Am Hockey Tournament held in Lake Placid, NY, recently. Both boys are nine year old defensemen competing in the Squirt Division (9 and 10 year olds) for the Connecticut RiverHawks out of The Rinks at Shelton.

The tournament took place December 1-4, culminating in a 3-1 championship round win over Darien on the 1932 Olympic Rink. The RiverHawks also won a game on the 1980 Miracle on Ice Rink. The local skaters played teams from as far away as Virginia.
