Childrenâs Programs
*Harry Potter Book Discussion: Join us on at 4 pm on Wednesday, September 17, for a discussion of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix by J.K. Rowling.
Liz Arneth and Margaret Brown will lead the group in conversation about the boy wizard in his fifth year at Hogwarts School. Books are available in the Young Adult area but the group will meet in the Story Room on the First Floor.
Stop by main floor circulation desk or call the library to register.
*The All-Around Joy Of Ice Cream: Leslie Troy will return on Saturday, September 27, with âI Scream, You Scream, We All Scream for Ice Cream!â a fun-filled, two-hour workshop that will explore the literature, poetry, science, math and geography of one of our favorite foods: ice cream. The workshop will run from 12:30 to 2:30 and is for children ages 7-10. Space is limited to 15.
A $10 materials fee is due upon registration. For more information call the libraryâs childrenâs department, 426-3851.
Adult Programs
*Attention Internet Users: Please be aware that Internet stations at the library close down 10 minutes prior to the official closing of the library. We appreciate your cooperation and understanding.
*Art Exhibits: Watercolors and pencil drawings by Joyce Pedersen and Marilyn White are on display in the libraryâs lower meeting room through September 30 during regular library hours.
The Charter Oak Chapter of the Historical Society of Early American Decoration has a display of membersâ work throughout the library. This unique artwork of Country Painting on metal, wood, and a variety of other mediums can be viewed throughout the library.
*Book Talks: Itâs always interesting to discuss a book with a group, so come join one of the libraryâs ongoing book groups for some great conversation and lively discussion. New members are always welcome.
The Mystery Book Group will meet on Tuesday, September 16, to talk about Pretty Maids All in a Row by Anthea Fraser. Call for start time.
The Evening Book Group will offer another chance to discuss Laura Hillenbrandâs Seabiscuit for those who canât get away during the day, this time at 7:30 pm on Thursday, September 18.
Day Book Sale, which begins on Saturday, August 30, and continues daily until Wednesday, September 3.
*Computer Classes: Dan Tannenbaum will once again be teaching two computer classes this month.
A class geared for the true beginner will be offered on Saturday, September 13, from 9 am to noon. A second class for the more advanced computer user will then run on Saturday, September 20, also 9 am to noon.
Registration is required for either class, and there is a $10 fee for the advanced class.
*Rubber Stamping Class: Try a new craft this fall. On Wednesday, September 24, at 7 pm, Barbara Shohet of Newtown will teach the finer points of rubber stamping. Examples of the projects are on display at the library. Youâll be amazed at what you can do! Class size is limited to 15 and a $10 supplies fee will be charged. Please sign up by calling the library.
*The Master Forger: On Thursday, September 25, at 7:30 pm, Ivan MacDonald will talk about the most sensational forgery case in art history. Come learn about infamous artist Han van Meegeren, who fooled the experts and taught them a very important lesson in the greatest art scandal of the 20th Century. Reservations are requested.
*Entertainment Books Are Here: The 2004 Entertainment Books, filled with discount coupons for area attractions, restaurants, etc, have arrived and are available for $22. You may also order books for other areas of the country. A great gift idea!
*PTA Activity Calendar: The 2003-004 PTA Activity calendar is on sale at the library for $10. Full of school holidays, the half-day schedule, and many other important community events to keep in mind during the school year, these calendars are selling quickly.
*Coming in October: The library will be a busy place in October with a foreign film festival, the return of The Intrepid Travelers (Wendy and Milton Clark), a song and dance review of the life and times of Agnes deMille, and a new program by Wayne Szmyt be on interviewing techniques. Stop by the library for more information on these and other free programs.
