NEW YORK CITY — The Marbella Gallery is mounting an exhibit of Aleen Aked’s (1907–2003) Florida paintings featuring palm trees, trellised gardens and the silent grandeur of men working in fields and shacks. The exhibit opens Tuesday, April 22, and will be on view through June 27.

In addition to her artistic creations, the Canadian-born artist participated in the aesthetic happenings of the Florida community. She was not only a member of the Southern States Art League and the Florida Federated Art Program, but also served as president of the Sarasota Art Association in 1942, continuing as secretary-treasurer for many years.

Canada honored her with a museum exhibition at the Robert McLaughlin Gallery Museum in 1989. To quote from the catalog of the exhibit in Oshawa, Ontario: “Hers was a life filled for over 80 years with service to family and community and creative achievement.”

The Marbella Gallery, 28 East 72nd Street, is open Tuesday–Friday from 11 am to 5:30 pm and by special appointment. For information, 212-288-7809.
