Hawleyville Project Ordered To Stop
The town has placed stop-work orders on Housatonic Railroad's project to build
a new driveway from Hawleyville Road to a lumber storage yard.
Rita Macmillan, the town land use director, said Thursday land use officials
met Wednesday with railroad representatives to discuss the driveway project
which the town halted after it was found to violate conservation and zoning
regulations. The project is just north of the Hawleyville Post Office.
The railroad will either have to obtain a special exception to the zoning
regulations or a change of zone from the Planning and Zoning Commission (P&Z)
to legally build the driveway, Mrs Macmillan said.
Also, the railroad will have to obtain a forest practices permit from the
Conservation Commission for the work, she said. The railroad cut down some
trees without first obtaining Conservation Commission approval, she said.
"They are being cooperative. They didn't realize they were doing anything
wrong," Mrs Macmillan said of the railroad's response to the cease-and-desist
orders which halted the project.
