Deer Vs Toyota
Newtown Police stated that at about 8 pm on August 31, Hannah Johnson of Wallingford was traveling westbound on Sugar Street when a deer entered the roadway and struck the 2010 Toyota Camry she was operating, causing front end damage. No enforcement was taken.
Restricted Turn
On September 3 at about 9:54 pm, Newtown Police responded to a report of a one-vehicle crash on Berkshire Road near Chestnut Hill Road. Police say George Sanchez, 68, of Danbury was operating a 1997 VW Jetta westbound when he stated he was temporarily blinded by an eastbound vehicle with its bright lights on. Sanchez said he swerved and struck a bank on the right shoulder causing damage sufficient to require the vehicle to be towed. Neither the operator nor his passenger were injured, and Sanchez was issued a verbal warning for making a restricted turn.
Three-Car Collision
Newtown Police responded to the area of 129 South Main Street at about 2:59 pm on September 6 after a report of a minor collision involving three vehicles. According to the report, David Dixon, Jr, 30, of Stamford was traveling southbound in a 2006 Chevrolet HHR when he failed to stop for traffic and hit the rear of a 2000 Toyota Celica being operated by James Radcliffe, 19, of Underhill Road in Sandy Hook. The Toyota was then forced into the rear of a 2010 Kia Forte operated by Erica Leonard, 33 of Pebble Road, which had slowed for stopped traffic. No injuries were reported at the scene and the HHR had to be towed. Dixon was issued an infraction for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart.
Lawn Damaged
Newtown Police responded to the area of Alpine Drive at about 3:35 pm on September 7, and learned that Emily Leidlein, 20, of Littlebrook Lane had been traveling northbound in a 1997 Lexus ES300, when a silver SUV reportedly crossed into the opposite lane causing Leidlein to swerve and leave the roadway, causing damage to a lawn, but not to the vehicle she was operating. The SUV reportedly continued on without stopping. Anyone with information on the incident is asked to contact police at 203-426-5841.
Furniture Taken
Newtown Police are seeking information after learning that one male and two females removed patio furniture from a home on Great Hill Road. The incident reportedly happened on September 7 at about 5 pm. Anyone with further details is asked to call 203-426-5841.
Hit Rocks
At about 1:12 pm on September 7, Newtown Police responded to a report of a vehicle off the road on Mile Hill South. Upon arrival they learned that David Cortina, 17, of Mile Hill Road South was operating a 2004 VW Jetta when he told police he swerved to avoid a rock in the roadway. As a result, the vehicle went off the road and struck several other rocks, causing damage that required the vehicle to be towed.
Injury Sustained
A Bridgeport resident reportedly sustained a back injury following a collision at 25 Main Street at about 6:54 pm on September 8. Police said Owen Katz Ross, 41, of Clifton Place was traveling southbound in his 1992 Honda Civic when he struck a 2002 Ford ranger pickup being operated by Ernest Gismond, 91, of Currituck Road. Police say Gismond was exiting a private driveway when he was struck by Ross, and as a result, was issued a warning for failure to grant the right of way. Ross was transported to Danbury Hospital by Newtown Ambulance volunteers and both vehicles were towed from the scene.
High School Theft
At about noon on September 8, several Newtown High School students reported money and personal items had been taken from backpacks stored in a locker room. After school officials and the school resource officer investigated, they determined a juvenile student had entered the locker room and taken the items from backpacks. That youthful offender was arrested and charged with larceny in the sixth degree and was released on a promise to appear in court on September 26.
Larceny Arrest
On September 8 at about 10:45 pm, Nicolas Nazer, 19, of Danbury was arrested on an active warrant stemming from an alleged larceny that was reported to Newtown Police on April 19. He was charged with Larceny in the fifth degree and was released on a $10,000 surety bond pending a September 23 court appearance.
Slight Damage
At about 11:15 am on September 9, Newtown Police responded to 38 Church Hill Road after a report of a minor collision. Upon arrival, officers discovered that Marc J. Puglisi, 53, of Cheshire was attempting to back into a parking spot when the Ford Economy van he was operating for 911 Restoration of Yonkers, N.Y., made contact with an unoccupied 2009 Honda Accord owned by a Sandy Hook resident. Police report there was slight damage to the rear bumper on the Honda. No enforcement was made and no injuries were reported.
Outstanding Warrant
Newtown Police reported that at about 1:11 am on September 9, Christopher Paul Basso, 21, of Taunton Lake Drive turned himself in to police after learning there was a warrant for his arrest. He was charged with operating under suspension, speeding, interfering, criminal impersonation, and second degree forgery. Police say Basso was stopped on June 4 for speeding and issued a summons, but officers later determined Basso had fraudulently used his brotherâs identification during the traffic stop. After the alleged criminal impersonation was discovered, police applied for and received a warrant for Bassoâs arrest. He was released on a $500 bond pending a September 23 court appearance.
Avoiding Deer
On September 9 at about 4:56 am a Waterbury resident operating a 1997 Dodge Caravan was traveling westbound on Interstate 84 just east of Exit 10 when a deer ran in front of his vehicle. The driver, Franco Gonzalez, 37, told State Police he swerved to avoid striking the animal and struck the metal guardrail, damaging about 20 feet of metal beam and two posts. The vehicle also sustained front end damage, and the operator was issued a verbal warning for failure to drive in the established lane.
Teen Center Incident
Newtown Police responded to the area of the Teen Center on Church Hill Road at about 3:45 pm on September 9 after a report of a possible assault. According to the report, about 40 to 50 Newtown High School students had gathered at the lot and were loitering without supervision after school was dismissed, and the victim, a 12-year-old eighth grade student, was chased on foot by a 15-year-old and a 14-year-old high school student and a 13-year-old middle school student. Police say the victim was tackled and sustained minor abrasions to his knees and elbows.
The parents of all the individuals involved were called to police headquarters. The 14-year-old high school student involved was charged with breach of peace and issued a juvenile court date of September 19. All others involved were released to their parents. Since all those involved were juveniles, no names were released by police.
Multiple Charges
At about 9:30 pm on September 9, police made a motor vehicle stop on Riverside Road near Bancroft Road and developed a number of violations on the operator, Nicholas Kenny, 29, of Underhill Road. Kenny was charged with misuse of plates, operation without insurance, failure to display plates, operating an unregistered vehicle, and failure to report an operatorâs change of address. He was subsequently arrested and released on a written promise to appear on September 23.
Injury Reported
A 52-year-old woman from Southbury said she sustained a minor back injury but refused medical treatment following a rear-end collision on eastbound Interstate 84 at about 4:43 pm September 9. According to state police, Laurie Fleischer of Holly Hill Lane was traveling in a 2008 Dodge Durango just west of Exit 9 when she was struck from behind by James Agor, 51, of Veron Drive, Carmel, N.Y., who was operating a 1998 Nissan Frontier SUV. He was issued a written warning for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart.
Suspended License
At about 1:37 am on September 10, Newtown Police observed a motor vehicle violation on Mt Pleasant Road and stopped to investigate. The operator, Jessica Peck, 19, of Danbury was subsequently arrested for operating with a suspended license. Police also discovered a small amount of marijuana in the vehicle. Peck was later released on a $50 cash bond pending a September 27 court date.
Car Into Pole
State police responded to a one-car crash just west of Exit 11 at about 6:11 pm on September 10, and reported that Pasquale Lifieri, 69, of Town Hill Road in Warren was operating a 2012 Hyundai Sonata when he lost control, striking a light pole. He complained of dizziness and was evaluated at the scene by Newtown Ambulance volunteers. The operator was issued a verbal warning for failure to maintain an established lane.
Button Shop DUI
At about 2:51 am on September 11, Newtown Police responded to a report of a crash on Button Shop Road. Upon arrival they discovered a white pickup truck had struck and knocked down a pole. According to the report, the operator had fled on foot. The operator, Justin Miller, 21, of Marlin Road was subsequently found in the area, taken into custody and charged with DUI, evading responsibility, and making a restricted turn. He was released after posting a $1,000 bond and received a September 27 court date.
Active Warrant
Newtown Police say that Alexa Faeth of Danbury turned herself in at about 5:30 pm on September 12 after learning there was an active warrant for her arrest, which stemmed from a motor vehicle collision that occurred on February 24 in town. She was charged with evading responsibility and was released on a written promise to appear in court on September 27.
Dropped Bottle
A Bridgeport man was operating a 2005 Chrysler 300 near 265 Berkshire Road around 3:16 pm on September 12, when he told police he lost control of the vehicle because he was reaching for a fallen water bottle on the floor of his passenger compartment. Police said when Claudinei DeSousa leaned over to retrieve the bottle, he caused the car to turn onto the right shoulder where it went into a ditch and brush. The car had to be towed from the scene, and the driver was issued an infraction for making an improper turn.
Highway Rear-Ender
At about 8:38 am on September 12, State Police responded to a report of a rear-end collision on Interstate 84 in the center lane just west of the Exit 11 on ramp. Upon arrival they found Ilva Dautaj, 27, of Hartford had been traveling between Exits 11 and 10, when her 2008 Honda Civic was struck from behind by Desiree Zilaro, 42, of Oakville, who was operating a 2002 Hyundai Elantra. According to police, Ms Dautaj complained of neck pain but refused medical attention at the scene. Ms Zilaro was issued an infraction for following too close.
Hit At Exit
On September 12 at about 5:26 pm, State Police responded to the Exit 9 eastbound off-ramp in Newtown after a report of a minor rear-end collision. They found Daniel Burns, 48, of Wendover Road had been exiting the highway and attempting to turn right, when his vehicle was hit from behind by a state-owned 2007 Dodge Caravan operated by Jazmein Curtis, 37, of Waterbury. No injuries were reported and no action against the rear operator was reported.
Mt Pleasant DUI
A resident complaint about a vehicle being operated erratically on Mt Pleasant Road led to the DUI arrest of Meghan Sanchez, 38, of Waterbury just after midnight on September 13. Following the complaint, local officers went to the area and located the vehicle in question. After a brief investigation they placed Sanchez under arrest, transported her to headquarters for processing and released her on a $100 bond with a September 27 court date.
Deer Strike
Newtown police were called to the area of 112 Toddy Hill Road at 9:47 pm on September 13 after a report of a vehicle striking a deer. They found a 2006 Toyota Scion coupe with minor front bumper damage being operated by James B. Harlow, 20, of Pepper Street in Monroe. No enforcement action was taken and no injuries were reported.
Trailer Hit
At about 6:53 pm on September 12 police responded to the intersection of Queen Street and Mile Hill Road after a reported collision. They reported that Eugene G. Martin, 50, of Old Log Town Road in Prospect was operating a 2004 Chevrolet Silverado pickup towing a trailer and waiting to make a left turn from Queen Street. Police say the trailer was struck from behind by Susan M. White, 44, of Charter Ridge Road who was operating a 2006 Cadillac Escalade. The Escalade sustained minor front bumper damage and there was no visible damage to the trailer. White was issued a written warning for following too close.
Failure To Appear
On September 12 at about 11:10 pm, Christopher Detrick, 20, of Charter Ridge Road turned himself in to police after being notified of an active arrest warrant. According to the report, the warrant stemmed from a failure to appear in court stemming from a larceny incident at 5 Queen Street that occurred on September 19, 2010. Detrick was charged with failure to appear in the second degree, larceny in the sixth degree and possession of alcohol by a minor. He was given a September 27 court date and released on a $500 appearance bond.
TV Taken

VW Vs Liberty
Police say that on September 13 at about 8 am, an eastbound vehicle on Mt Pleasant Road being operated by Theresa Carlisle of Ridge Road stopped behind a vehicle waiting to turn onto Taunton Lake Road. Police say she was hit from behind by a VW wagon being operated by Joshua Brooks of Circuit Avenue in Watertown, causing major front end damage to the VW, and minor damage to the rear of Carlisleâs Jeep Liberty. There were no injuries and police issued Brooks an infraction for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart. His vehicle had to be towed from the scene.
