âNorthern Lightsâ
At The Homesteads
Swedish soprano Dominique Hellsten and Russian pianist Maxim Vladimiroff bring their program, âNorthern Lights: Songs from Finland, Norway, Russia and Swedenâ to The Homesteads At Newtown on Sunday, September 12, at 2:30 pm.
Ms Hellsten, whose repertoire ranges from the 17th Century to the present, has performed in Europe, the United Kingdom and the United States. Her particular affinity is for music of the 20th and 21st Centuries, and she gave the premiere of Naji Hakimâs mass for solo soprano, Missa Resurrectionis, in the United Kingdom in 1996. Mr Hakim subsequently composed a cantata, Phedre, especially for her voice, which she performed in Londonâs Purcell Room to a rapturous audience and critical acclaim.
Mr Vladimiroff was born in Sochi, Russia. He studied piano with Dmitri Serov and graduated with honors from Gnessin College of Music in Moscow. In 1991 he came to the United States and in 1999 received a master of fine arts in music composition from the University of California. He has studied with Samuel Adler, Narcis Bonet, Philip Lasser and Michel Merlet.
A first level winner in the National Association of Composers USA competition, Mr Vladimiroffâs works have been performed by New Music Ensemble, Flux Quartet and Lafayette College Choir, among other groups.
Mr Vladimiroff teaches in his private studio in Brewster, N.Y., and at the summer program of the European American Musical Alliance in Paris.
Admission to Sundayâs concert is free, and light refreshments will be served. The Homesteads at Newtown, at 166 Mt Pleasant Road, can be reached for more information at 426-8118.
