Joseph Flynn Appointed Chief Judge Of Appellate Court

HARTFORD — Chief Justice William J. Sullivan announced on January 30 that Appellate Court Judge Joseph P. Flynn will succeed Judge William J. Lavery, who became chief court administrator on February 1. Judge Flynn’s appointment also took effect on February 1.

“Judge Flynn is an extremely capable and dedicated jurist, and I am confident in his ability to lead the Appellate Court,” said Chief Justice Sullivan. A Derby native, Judge Flynn graduated from Fairfield University and Georgetown University Law Center. He was admitted to practice before the Connecticut state and federal courts in 1965, and in 1966 before the US Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit.

He was in private practice of law in Ansonia for almost 20 years. He represented the 17th District as a state senator from 1975 to 1979. He also served as corporation counsel for the town of Seymour from 1967 to 1971.

Former governor William A. O’Neill named him to the Superior Court in October 1985. Former governor John G. Rowland nominated him to the Appellate Court in 2001.
