BROOKFIELD – After getting swept back on May 1, in their return to the track following a long layoff, the rebuilding Nighthawks needed a little something to pick them up and the four wins they have earned since then might have done the trick.

Last Thursday, the ‘Hawks traveled to Bunnell and routed Notre Dame (94-47) and Immaculate (128-11) while being edged out by the Lady Bulldogs (78-68). Then on Monday, the ‘Hawks traveled to Brookfield and earned two more wins over Lauralton Hall (751/2  - 551/2 ) and Brookfield (721/2  - 681/2 ) while suffering a very narrow loss to Weston (72-69).

Things are sure looking up.

As could only be expected at this point, Janelle Tracy was a double winner at both meets, capturing first in the 100- and 200-meter dashes and was consistent in both events (13.0 and 12.7 in the 100, 26.7 and 26.4 in the 200).

Down in Brookfield, Cara Delvecchio (300 intermediate hurdles, at 51.2), Shannon Elf (800 meters, at 2:35) and Trina Popowski (shot put, at 26-9) were the only other first-place finishers - individual or relay – and that says a lot for depth.

Allison Frobey was second in the 400 meters; Erin Kostecki and Shawna King were third and fourth in the 3,200 meters; Russell was third in the 110 high hurdles; Delvecchio was third in the triple jump; Elf was second in the high jump; and Tristan Blanchard was second in the discus.

In Stratford on Monday, Kostecki (3,200 meters, at 12:59), Elf (800 meters, at 2:35) and Frobey (high jump, at 4-8) were the only individual winners other than Tracy and were aided by the clean sweep of the 4x100, 4x400, and 4x800 relay teams. Once again depth played a strong factor as Russell and Blanchard were fourth and fifth in the 110 high hurdles, Delvecchio was second in the 300 intermediate hurdles, Kostecki and Snow were third and fourth in the 1,600 meters, Frobey was second in the 400 meters, Jessica Snow was fourth in the 800 and 1,600 meters, Blanchard was second in the javelin, Delvecchio was third in the triple jump, and Elf was second in the long jump.

Now at 6-6, the ‘Hawks will travel to New Fairfield on Monday to take on New Fairfield, Stratford and Joel Barlow in the final regular season meet. The South-West Conference championship meet is slated for Monday, May 22, at Joel Barlow in Redding.
