Shirley Nichols Berry, 83, died June 4 in Roanoke, Va. The daughter of Lydia and Andrew B. Nichols, she was born May 31, 1923.
Mrs Berry grew up on a small farm in Taunton District, Newtown. She was on the Newtown High School basketball team. She graduated with honors from Newtown High School and was a graduate of Danbury State Teachers College.
In November 1947 she married the Rev Arthur E. Berry of Bethel. Her life centered around her family and the activities of the nine churches her husband was appointed to serve during his lifetime. She shared a love of music, especially the opera and symphony, with her husband. She was a member of the choir of the churches served.
Following the death of her husband in May 1986, she resided with her son, Thomas, and his family in Westbury, Long Island, until 1997 when she moved to Roanoke.
She was an active member of the Westbury United Methodist Church in Roanoke and was a member of their choirs.
Three children, Thomas, Philip, and Priscilla survive Mrs Berry. Four grandchildren, Christopher and Jeanette Berry of Westbury and Laura and Kristen Brady of East Hampton; and one great-grandchild, Lauraâs daughter Akaelianna, survive her as well.
