To the Editor:

Both the Newtown Republican Town Committee and the Newtown Republican Caucus have endorsed Carey Schierloh as their candidate for registrar of voters. Carey has done an outstanding job as secretary for the Republican Town Committee. She is hardworking and conscientious. We believe she is the best choice for registrar.

While she was an owner-operator, she not only managed her own business, but also played a leadership role in many town organizations including the owner-operator contract committee, the bus routing committee, PTA, and the NHS Band Parents. With regard to her role within the owner-operator organization, she organized people, maintained the records for the owner-operator contract committee and helped the school district improve the efficiencies of the bus routes.

 Carey’s Initial Goals as Registrar:

Increase voter participation/registration. Educate high school and middle school students about the importance of voting, have mock elections, and encourage students to train and work at the polls; reach out to seniors, offer demonstrations of how to use the ballet machine; voter registration drives at high school, Senior Center, and special functions; send “how-to-register” notices to new and/or unregistered residents; work with town boards and organizations (PTAs, Lions Club, Chamber of Commerce, Newtown Neighbors & Newcomers) to “Get Out the Vote.”

Increase Efficiency of Registrar’s Office: Review registrar budget and determine if there is an opportunity to get better pricing from vendors; review current processes for the opportunity to make them more efficient; review voter rolls to ensure information is accurate and current.

Did you know?... Carey has lived in Newtown for 35 years. Her husband Ed has lived in Newtown since he was 8. He attended Newtown schools, as did their four children — they even had some of the same teachers as Ed! Carey and her husband Ed met in high school while they both worked at Masonicare (Buckingham Gardens back then). Carey loves to quilt. In the past three years, Carey has focused on baby quilts for family and friends

Carey Schierloh is a dedicated, hardworking, team player. She is detail oriented and has proven herself as a reliable community volunteer. She believes in the same philosophy as quoted by Walter H. Judd: “People often say that, in a democracy, decisions are made by a majority of the people. Of course, that is not true. Decisions are made by a majority of those who make themselves heard and who vote — a very different thing.”

Please join me in voting for Carey Schierloh at the primary on Tuesday, August 14.

Dennis Bloom, Chairman

Newtown Republican Town Committee
