The titles keep piling up for the Newtown seventh-grade girls travel basketball team.
Newtown won five games in three days â including two over archrival Danbury â to captured the Pepsi RBA Hoops Challenge tournament title last weekend. The locals have now won four tournaments in five attempts over the past two years or so ⦠and that includes one league championship.
As usual, all 11 girls contributed to the wins with a great mix of scoring, defending and rebounding. But teamwork has always been a staple of the team.

Pepsi RBA Hoops
Newtown 44, Monroe 41 â Meghan Condon scored 10 points to lead Newtown in a second-half comeback against Monroe. The team fell behind early, then increased its full-court pressure to force turnovers which led to easy baskets. Alyssa Finkenstadt added eight points and Riley Wurtz had seven to go with six steals.
Newtown 40, New Canaan 19 â Newtown jumped all over New Canaan early, outscoring their opponents 20-1 in the first half and cruising to victory. The win avenged a loss from two weeks ago and highlighted a balanced team effort. Jessica Jowdy, Jessica Lynch, Alyssa Finkenstadt and Kendall Svanda contributed 30 points to the total, many coming on fast-break baskets after breaking New Canaanâs trapping, full-court pressure. Nora Murphy and Stefanie Clavette paced Newtownâs stifling defense.
Newtown 34, Danbury 31 â In a preview of the tournament final, Newtown played an aggressive man-to-man defense against a much taller opponent and was able to hold down the high-powered Danbury offense while scoring enough for the win. Arianna Papaj and Jessica Jowdy were outstanding in defending Danburyâs leading scorers and tallest players, and the rest of the team followed their lead in shutting off Danburyâs lanes to the basket. Offensively, Newtown was led by Riley Wurtz and Alyssa Finkenstadt, who combined for 22 points.
Newtown 42, Ridgefield 31 â In the semi-finals, Newtown jumped out to the early lead and never looked back as the team coasted to victory. Kendall Svanda and Meghan Condon triggered Newtownâs offense with strong rebounding and outlet passes while Jessica Lynch (11 points), Jessica Jowdy (9), Alyssa Finkenstadt (8) and Abbey Doski (6) provided the offensive spark.
Newtown 39, Danbury 36 â Newtown proved its win the night before was not a fluke as it toppled Danbury to win the championship. The game was close throughout, giving the boisterous crowd a final to remember. Nine players scored for Newtown, with Alyssa Finkenstadt once again leading the team with eight points. Jessica Jowdy and Jessica Lynch combined for 10 points and 22 rebounds, while Arianna Papaj once again shut down Danburyâs leading scorer. Molly Mahony hit a key shot from the foul line to push Newtown on top early and Stefanie Clavette buried a three-pointer midway through the second half that gave Newtown its biggest lead. After Danbury scrambled to tie the game at 32-32, Riley Wurtz, Jessica Jowdy and Abbey Doski all scored to secure the victory.

Danbury 53, Newtown 41 â Newtown kept the game close until midway through the third when Danbury scored eight unanswered points. Anthony Berrarducci made 5-of-6 foul shots in the fourth quarter. Josh Barrett canned 12 points to lead the locals while Kyle Wilcox added eight. Michael Lengel, Austin Bonadio and Dan Gallagher led the D.

Attack 35, Southbury 25 â Meaghan Harkins, Stephanie Roman, Erin Kenning and Claire Miles combined for 32 of the teamâs 35 points in a win over Southbury. Bridget Power and Tressa Scott had three steals and seven rebounds between them.
New Canaan 33, Attack 25 â In a tournament loss, Maddie Good and Suzie Gissen combined for eight points. Julia Trudell dropped in four points and was spectacular on defense as Samantha Steimle had four rebounds and a basket and Brittany Tolla had four assists and two steals.

Newtown 33, New Milford 32 â A late hoop by Kevin LeBlanc lifted Newtown past New Milford in a low-scoring affair. Gavin Scallon, Pieter Martino and Conner Quinn tossed in six points apiece.
Newtown 55, Weston 38 â Nick Gerbo scored 13 points and Connor Quinn added 11 as Newtown won its sixth consecutive game to improve to 13-7. Christian Barrett tossed in nine points and David Gerics added eight.
Girls 5th
Darien 15, Newtown 8 â Jessica Principi popped in four points while Kristie Vos Winkel and Kerry Scallon had two points each in a losing effort. Newtown held Darien to just one point in the second half in a tough defensive effort.

Newtown 45, Fairfield 25 â Virgil Prococcini played an outstanding overall game and scored eight points to lead Newtown to the win. Mike Davis and Matt Mossbarger combined for 15 points as Drew Tarantino and Chase Wurtz combined for 12 points and both played well at the point guard position. Bubba LeBlanc hit a couple of key jumpers to break the game open in the second half.
Trumbull 39, Newtown 25 â Newtown played a strong, defensive minded Trumbull team that lead at halftime by 16 points.

Da Bears 30, Knicks 9 â Katherine Lotrecchiano scored eight points, Kelly OâConnor dished off nine assists and Liz Eiseman made three steals to lead Da Bears to the win. Nicole Rotante played well. For the Knicks, Deanna Tassinari scored six points and Breane Lubinsky grabbed seven rebounds. Jessica Haitz and Caitlin Dowling had solid performances.
Da Bears 28, Huskies 21 â Ashley Perry, Nicole Rotante and Kelly OâConnor scored six points apiece to lead Da Bears. Kelly Gaston pulled down 11 rebounds and Meredith Bridges made five steals. For the Huskies, Sarah Pettinelli canned five points as Katie Fossum paced the defense.
The Rebels 39, Knicks 18 â Megan Gibbons popped in 14 points to lead The Rebels. Erin Brown, Kaitlyn Vos Winkel and Courtney Amaral had a solid floor game. For the Knicks, Deanna Tassinari scored 12 points and Breanne Lubinsky grabbed 15 rebounds. Jessica Haitz and Caitlyn Dowling played well.
Huskies 29, Hurricanes 16 â Lexi Black scored nine points and Emma Herring added six to lift the Huskies past the Hurricanes. Emily Rowe and Suzy Wright played well. For the âCanes, Tori Picerno popped in 12 points as Casey Kearns, Sara Benson and Casey Rutter had strong floor games.
Celtics 34, The Rebels 24 â Maggie Korth had a 10-point performance to lead the Celtics to the win. Cristina Caporale, Erin Bell and Kasturi Mitra played well. For The Rebels, Ashley Cirone had seven points while Kaitlyn Vos Winkel had seven steals. Megan Gibbons (4 points) and Courtney Amaral played well.
Hurricanes 35, Celtics 22 â Casey Rutter canned eight points as Carlie Gehrman, Sara Benson (6 steals) and Tori Picerno played well. For the Celtics, Maggie Korth and Cady Jackman had five points apiece as Erin Bell and Shannon Barra had good floor games.

Hurricanes 34, Eagles 27 â Sean Burson scored 10 points and Hank Helgren dished off six assists as the Hurricanes doused the Eagles. Don Morrissey made four steals. For the Eagles, Dan Sclafani scored 14 points and pulled down 12 rebounds while Will Northrup had seven points and 12 rebounds to lead the way. Eric Samuelson had a strong floor game with five steals and six rebounds.
Vipers 47, Hornets 30 â Greg Frattaroli scored 12 points to lift the Vipers to the win. Jeff Grasso, Nick Dinelli and Kyle Harrington played well. For the Hornets, Ryan Power popped in 10 points. Jake Enriquez (5 points) and Kory Kling (3 assists) played well.
Regulators 40, Thunder 36 â Sam Kerr poured in 24 points as the Regulators nipped the Thunder. Greg Campbell chipped in seven points and Scott Wexler made five steals. For the Thunder, Will Arndt and Doug Brodbeck combined for 21 points as Ben Stoller and Ryan Lemay led an aggressive defense.
Hawks 40, Huskies 33 (OT) â Austin Jones canned 15 points and Kevin Dill had a beautiful game on defense with nine blocks and 13 rebounds to lead the Hawks to the overtime win. Brandon Body chipped in six points and Colin Morris made four steals. For the Huskies, Thomas Capozziello scored 12 points and Curtis Droniak grabbed 10 rebounds. Mike Lord (5 assists) and Theo Hartlett (5 steals) had solid efforts.
Gotham Gators 42, Rockets 42 (OT) â Cody Fisher scored 16 points and Cody Williams grabbed 10 rebounds as the Gators drew even with the Rockets in an overtime thriller. Jack Kneisel (6 assists), Scott Keating and Matt Hoffman played well. For the Rockets, Ryan Crowell had nine rebounds and Mike Mossbarger had two blocks to lead the way. Robbie Carroll dished off four assists and Brian Reed made six steals.
Thrashers 40, Rockets 35 â Nick Saviano and John Wlasuk popped in eight points apiece to lift the Thrashers. Josh Volpe (6 steals) and Tyler Trumbull (10 rebounds) played well. For the Rockets, Brian Reed drained 12 points as Robbie Carroll had nine points and nine rebounds. Chad Magoulas sparked the D.
Wildcats 27, Hawkeyes 21 â Derek Krewson canned 10 points to lead the âCats to the win. Eric McCabe, Matt Vavrek and Mark McLaughlin anchored the defense. For the âEyes, Lewis Thompson scored seven points, Rob Uhde had four steals and Robert Mascher grabbed seven rebounds.

Gunners 46, Regulators 37 â Michael Daubert poured in 20 points to lift the Gunners to the win. Tom Primavera and Eric Fiore played well. For the Regulators, Wyatt Depuy tossed in 18 points as Nicky Sajovic and Justin Cherry played well.
Blue Devils 56, Nighthawks 40 â Reid Schmidt scored 18 points and Chris Devaney pulled down 21 rebounds to lead the Blue Devils to the win. For the âHawks, Michael Scharfenberg poured in 22 points and Dan Poeltl paced the D. Jim Pearson and John Meyers had good floor games.
Huskies 40, Knicks 21 â Stefan Dullinger dropped in 12 points as Devin DiNicola, Max Lopez and Colin Moller played well to lift the Huskies to the win. For the Knicks, Alex Arena canned five points as Joe Davis, Zach Zahansky and Tom Bauer had good efforts.
Grizzlies 45, Knicks 39 â Three players scored in double figures (Alex Roche 16, Christian Mather 11 and Dave Cartisano 10) to lead the Grizzlies to the win. Josh Villa pulled down nine rebounds and Nick Madden blocked a pair of shots. For the Knicks, Michael Senf scored 10 points as Alex Arena, Brian Krueger and KC Condon had solid floor games.
Raptors 40, Tar Heels 33 â Justin DeVellis poured in 23 points as the Raptors clawed the Tar Heels. Kevin Shpunt, JP Kitzmiller and Jack Kearney put forth good efforts. For the Heels, Phil Reynolds popped in 13 points as Jeff Hoffman, Chase Hutchinson and Pat Mullins (7 rebounds) played well.

Knicks 37, Nighthawks 19 â Jacob Mooreâs 10-point effort helped lift the Knicks past the Nighthawks. Dan Cummings, Pairish Afriyie and Justin Weiner had good games. For the âHawks, Timothy Kelly popped in 10 points while Spencer Brindley, Brian Arnold and Andrew Hickey played well.
Huskies 30, Notre Dame 18 â Chris Carroll scored 15 points to lead the Huskies to the win. Matt Wood, Ty Runkle and Dan Spillane had solid performances. For Notre Dame, Shay DeMarche and Don Sun combined for 10 points as Cameron Eiseman and Grant Larnerd played well.

Heat 27, Warriors 23 â Colton Smith and Robbie McCabe combined for 16 points to lift the Heat to the narrow win. Jon Responda, Harry Duffy and Joe Santella played well. For the Warriors, Nick Roche canned 12 points while Kevin Ovendorf, Curtis Giles and Baxter Hankin had solid performances.
Raptors 30, Nighthawks 22 â Julian Dunn drained 18 points and James Burdette had five steals and sparked a spectacular defensive effort to lead the Raptors past the Nighthawks. Will Dalton (5 assists) and Eric Cascone (7 rebounds) played well. For the âHawks, Jaret DeVellis scored eight points as Austin Huffman, Liam Decker and Trevor Palmer played well.
Rockets 30, Wildcats 19 â Connor Roche had 12 points and Logan Walsh added eight more along with five assists to fuel the Rockets. Max Rucinski made four steals as Michael Cirone dropped in eight points with 10 rebounds. For the âCats, Forest Speed dropped in seven points and Harrison Depuy pulled down five rebounds. Jack Beal and David Csordas played well.
Huskies 31, Thunder 22 â Bobby Archiere scored 10 points and Bryce Decker grabbed 10 rebounds to lead the Huskies past the Thunder. Daniel Colucci made five steals and Carl Whippie played well. For the Thunder, Nicholas Rosario and Jacob Hill combined for 14 points as Aiden Petershack, Andy DeWolfe and Alec Clark (6 rebounds) had good floor games.

Red Rockets 24, Lightning 9 â Kelsey Muniz led the high-scoring Rockets with eight points while Meghan Powers and Sienna Mather held down the Lightning. Shaina Errico led the Lightning with four points and Kailee Dunnigan and Amelia Muratori contributed as well.
Strikers 14, Mustangs 12 â Jenna Hanson scored eight points to lead the Strikers. Tanya Tucker and Christina Tolkuci also contributed on offense while Michaela Kuligowski, Taylor LaFave and Maddie Peck played well. Sarah Lynch led the Mustangs with eight points as Meghan Grimes and Hanna Amaripour played great defense in the loss.

Panthers versus Yellow Peeps â Allie Indelicato, Teagan Doherty, Carly Cohane and Emily Neave played well for the Panthers as Meghan Doyle paced the Peeps.
Tigers versus Eagles â Brittney Antous, Emma Buzzanca, Kate Laaksonen and Alexis Tucker powered the Tigers while Hailey Conrad, Courtney Demeglio, Mallory Lobuglio and Joanna Vodola anchored the Eagles.
Blue Swish versus Purple Penguins â Lindsay Hoyt, Sydney Flint, Hannah Hripak and Marina Renzi had strong games for the Swish as Mega Goyda, Tara Hegarty, Sarah Durr and Emma Sheridan played well for the Penguins.
Huskies versus Fighting Irish â Nicole Zaccaro, Maddie Bridges, Tessa Leon-Gambetta and Jordan Svanda played well for the Huskies as Abby Kohler, Casey Harkins, Celia Gold and Clare Boyle powered the Irish.

Yellow Lightning versus Chargers â Jared Pearson, Jack Palermo, Ethan Burg and Jordan Chipman led the Lightning as Matt Davis, Timmy LeBlanc, Charlie Fletcher and Tommy Elliott paced the Chargers.
Purple Bandits versus Exterminators â Austin Engler, Greg Harrison, Austin LeBlanc and David Berquist powered the Bandits while Matt Campbell, John DelRossi, Matt Gerics and Joey Duero had good games for the Exterminators.
Huskies versus Blizzard â Matt Bucci, Alex Dunleavy, Robert Katrinak and Brandon Johnson paced the Huskies as Alex Gerbo, Jake Lapp, Connor Barrett and Matthew Guinee anchored the Blizzard.
Knicks versus Sharks â Jack Moulder, Bobby Haskins, Andrey Masser and Patrick Heinlein paced the Knicks as Tommy Kitzmiller, Holden Turk, Quinlan Hart and Greg Trimarchi had solid efforts for the Sharks.
Green Pythons versus Flames â Nate Wutzke, Sam Czel, Clint Stergue and Rob Hutchins powered the Pythons while Ryan McInerney, Steve Moccio, Nicholas Bourgeois and James Barry led the Flames.
Nighthawks versus Blue Jays â Kieran Lynch, Justin Hall, Cam Mitchell and Dylan Bartlett paced the âHawks as Nick Genovese, Nick Lansing, Matthew Ingwersen and Ethan Carpenter played well for the Jays.
Vipers versus Orange Crush â Evan Eggleston, Andrew Svanda, Brian Kiley and Hunter Booker gave the Vipers some bite as Kevin Finnegan, William Gottschalck, Bryce Mather and Jeremy Salaris paced the Crush.
Timberwolves versus Green Goblins â Graham Dowd, Cole Rogalin, Colin Patrick and Dillon Palumbo played well for the T-Wolves while Kyle Haas, Kyle Keeping, kevin Chernoff and Dylan Cortese paced the Goblins.
