GIRLS C/D DIVISION

 

STRIKERS 5, HAWKS 1: Melissa Russell, Danielle Springmeyer and Katy Rose McNulty all scored to lead the Strikers to the win. For the Hawks, Diana Rawson, Alicia Woolf and Jennifer Kessler had solid performances.

GIRLS E DIVISION

 

RAPTORS 4, TEAM (#3) 0: Meaghan McCarthy and Jenn Brewer scored two goals apiece to lead the Raptors to the win. Jen Durelli and Mary Bloshuk also played well. For Team #3, Katie Powers and Meagan McGowan had good performances.

BOYS E DIVISION

 

HURRICANES 6, PANTHERS 2: Peter Leone scored three goals and Daniel Cassidy added two more to lead the Hurricanes to the win. Ben Spiegel added a goal. Aaron Caldwell and Drew Woods sparkled on defense. For the Panthers, Michael Cagganello scored a pair of goals as Evan Ritzinger and Kyle Hensel played well.

 COYOTES 3, ROADRUNNERS 0: Kris Arndt, Kyle Droniak and Steven Musco all scored to lead the Coyotes to the win. Stephen Sapienza was strong on defense. For the Roadrunners, Kyle DiNicola, Derek Mayo and Ronald Swift all played well.

EAGLES 2, LIGHTNING 2: Henry Sims and Bijan Hughes scored for the Eagles and Ryan Hudock scored a pair for the Lightning in a 2-2 tie. For the Eagles, Jacob Dauz led the defense and Matt Hill did a great job in goal. For the Lightning, Steve Jaroszewski was strong on offense while Dale and Nicholas Nieves were solid on defense.

TORNADOES 2, CHEETAHS 1: Matt Yakush scored a pair of goals to lift the Tornadoes to the win. Evan Sapienza and keeper John Sapienza anchored the defense and Alexander Hamilton had a fine all-around game. For the Cheetahs, Christopher Bock and Kelly Walsh led the offense while Spencer Scott and Michael Daily led the defense. Matthew Whitley-Rodriguez, in his first soccer game in Newtown, scored the lone Cheetahs goal.

GIRLS F DIVISION

 

SCREAMING NIGHTMARES 3, TEAM INDEPENDENCE 3: Rebecca Jaroszewski scored three first-half goals to put the Screaming Nightmares on top – and they held on for the tie. Megan Rockwell, Kaley Kruger and Hillary Buzaid played strong defense. For Team Independence, Meaghan Carney scored a pair of goals while Alexandra Grant, Bernice Bryant and Matilda Dean all played well.

LIGHTNING 5, STRIKERS 1: Paige Woodhouse scored a pair of goals while Taylor Smith, Ellen Tabler and Meredith LaPerch scored one apiece to lead the Lightning to the win. For the Strikers, Ellen Ritzinger scored the lone goal while Leah Barrett and Ashley Szabo both played well offensively. Katie Plunkett had a solid game on D.

TORNADOES 4, TIGERS 2: The Tornadoes came out on top of the Tigers for the season opener with a 4-2 win. Emma Rodriquez, Stephanie Sanchez, Katie Pessin each scored with Ali Modzelewski and Molly Day getting together for the fourth goal for the Tornadoes. Samantha Dinnan found the net twice for the Tigers with Michelle Davies playing a solid game. Turning in solid defense for both teams were Colleen Cunningham and Kelly Anne Brophy for the Tornadoes & Ali Korchman and Meahgan Wilson for the Tigers.

TEAM_(#5) 2, TEAM (#6) 1:_Jacqui Kirol scored a pair of goals to lead Team #5 to the win. Adelle Cerreta had an outstanding game on defense. Kendra O’Connor scored for Team #6. Allison Leher and Casey Day played well.

BOYS F DIVISION

 

RAPTORS 5, ROCKETS 0: Ryan Pasko, Nathan Stein and Timmy Arnone played well on defense while Bryan Lehrer, Daniel Lynch, Chris McCann and Evan Kennedy (2) scored the goals that lifted the Raptors to the win. For the Rockets, RJ Reman, Joshua Zimmerman and Kevin Carney all played well.

ROADRUNNERS 2, WOLVERINES 1: Two early Roadrunner goals by Kyle Moore held up against a hard-charging Wolverine squad.  A second-half goal by the Wolverines’ Joshua Muniz narrowed the gap. The Roadrunners’ James Truckle made an excellent save on a tough Nicholas Nazer shot in the fourth quarter to preserve the win. Aaron Nezbesky also played well for the Wolverines and Nicholas Ryder did a fine job for the Roadrunners.

WOLFPACK 3, SHARKS 0: Thomas Murphy scored two goals and Morgan Leuzzi added one to lead the Wolfpack to the win. Colby Summerlin and Marc Bonacci played well. For the Sharks, Josh Engler and Tom Stewart did well on offense while Conor Donnelly was sharp in goal.

DRAGONS 5, TIGERSHARKS 1: The Dragons slayed the aggressive Tigersharks 5-1, in their season opener. Ben Morrison and Oliver Powers both scored twice while Gregory Campbell netted an additional one. Michael Canafiello was strong in both goal and the midfield, for the Dragons. Patrick Svitek, Dakota Voliotes and Trevor Todd all had strong games for the Tigersharks.

LASERS 4, CULLIGANS 1: Caleb Benore scored a pair of goals while Daniel Greenwood and Robert Carroll scored one apiece to lead the Lasers to the win. Ian Hripak and Michael Shevlin turned in strong defensive performances. For the Culligans, Timmy Culligan scored the lone goal with strong support from Grant Braun and Andy Hsu.

GREEN_FALCONS 5, PANDA_BEARS_0:_Ishan Tatake scored a pair of goals while Kyle Kromberg and Eric Thornberg scored one apiece to lead the Green Falcons to the win. For the Bears, Kevin_Curry was a standout.

GIRLS U10 TRAVEL

 

HURRICANES 4, TORRINGTON 0: Despite a gallant effort put forth by Torrington’s goalies, the Hurricanes persistence finally was rewarded. Emily DeMarco scored two goals towards the end of the first half. Megan Hansen and Colleen Thornberg each scored a goal closing out the victory for the Hurricanes. Molly Curry and Haley Keane provided the blanket defense for the shut out.

NEWTOWN 8, MIDDLEBURY 1: In an opening win, Mike Kearns scored three times and Jason Kostecki scored twice. Kurt Nacewicz, Andrew Domingos, and Mickey Fay all scored for the winners. Ryan Goodrich, John Gouveia, Mike Kearns, Ethan Carotti all contributed  assists. Connor Collier had a very strong defensive game for Newtown.

 

 

GIRLS U11 TRAVEL

 

NAVIGATORS 6, SHEPAUG 0: Katie Kirrane scored a pair of goals and Jackie Schulz, Harriet Morgan, Sammie Ciaccia and Rachel Maley scored one goal each to lead the Navigators to the win. Bethany Morin recorded the shutout in goal with seven saves and was aided with strong defensive support from Jackie Petrasanta, Christie Attanasio, and Julie Landin. Laura Konkos, Gabrielle Nastri, Ashley Braun and Dana Schunter all played well.

Nutmeg Classic

 

The Vipers ventured to the heart of soccer country – Manchester – to face three other Connecticut teams in the Nutmeg Classic Soccer Tournament. Within Newtown’s bracket of four teams were Glastonbury, South Windsor and Colchester.

In the two days of competition, the Vipers went 3-0-1, including a 4-0 final match victory against a strong Glastonbury team that clinched the first-place title.

It was their first in Connecticut’s competitive U-11 Division.

Newtown’s first match was against Glastonbury, who the Vipers had faced as U-10s in the spring and narrowly beaten. Glastonbury opened up with a feverish offensive attack that caught the Vipers on their heels and twice setting up at the center circle as Glastonbury netted two within the first two minutes of play.

Once the Vipers settled down and regained their composure the momentum of the game quickly changed as Alex Bowen crossed a ball to Paul Andras, who found the nylon only moments later. Justin Miller tied the match in the second minute of the second half, but the Viper offense followed by only finding the Glastonbury keeper or the outside of the opposing net.

Danny Smith was strong in the net for the Viper and with only one minute to play, Andras made a frantic run down the right side, angling in front of the defense and gave Newtown the 3-2 win with a low ball to the far side netting.  

The Vipers met up with South Windsor next and the first half was very evenly matched as South Windsor moved the ball well within a balanced formation. South Windsor started the scoring in the second half with a goal in the third minute and it wasn’t until Anthony Florez’s sprint through the middle tied the match in the eleventh minute.

Drew Taylor and Nick Kallivrousis both played well in midfield. Miller put the Vipers on top with a twentieth minute goal on a run from midfield past two defenders, on a pass from Jason Smith. Chris Meier and Mat DeBrantes gave valiant efforts on defense, but after a quick restart from midfield by South Windsor, Newtown could not defend quick enough and the tying ball was scored with only three seconds left to play.

With a win and a tie, Newtown was in need of a another win to clinch the first place position within the bracket and the Vipers did that with a convincing 4-0 victory over Colchester.

Colchester felt the sting of the Viper attack early when Andras and Bowen netted quick goals within the first 11 minutes. Newtown dominated play and built its confidence through aggressive ball movement and team play. Collin Babbage, Kevin Davies and Kevin Troy were the defensive cornerstones for Newtown, as Colchester’s offense could not maintain any momentum.

The second half was all Newtown’s with Florez and Max Hoagland showing Colchester their speed on long runs toward the box for scores. Tony Gallucci, Ethan Canfield and Zack Vargas all supported the Viper attack with energetic outside midfield play. Bowen gave a strong second half performance in goal after Danny Smith denied Colchester in the first half.

The final match was set with Newtown to face Glastonbury again, and when Andras lofted a high floater from the right corner of the box, over the goalies head in the fifth minute, Newtown took control of the match. Chris Schreiber, Gallucci, Vargas and Canfield drew most of the attention as the Vipers played possession soccer wide and to the corners.  Kallivrousis and Troy dominated as the Viper “stoppers” while Chris Meier once again played his consistent “sweeper” position in front of goalie Danny Smith.  Jason Smith patrolled the center midfield position and helped push the second half attack. Hoagland and Kallivrousis each netted balls along with Jason Smith, who headed a corner kick into the net.

The final 4-0 victory clinched the first place finish for the Vipers.

GIRLS U12 TRAVEL

 

NITROS 6, MIDDLEBURY 1: Tyler Nicoll scored three times and Sarah Gutbrod added two more as the Nitros exploded in their season opener. Lindsay Weber also scored while Kristene Salbu, Meredith Palo and Jennifer Iassogna were strong on defense.

BOYS U12 TRAVEL

 

NEWTOWN 7, SHERMAN 0: Jack Quinn scored three times for Newtown in their league opener. Matt Boland, Michael Kennedy. Mark Cinquegrana, Michael Klein, and Chris Nuelle each scored for the winners. Billy McCann contributed two assists; with Mike Kennedy and Jack Quinn contributing assists as well. Stephen Marks played  well in goal for Newtown.
