Marie Emilie Hayden, 80, of Southbury, formerly of Brookfield, died December 11, after a brief illness. She was the wife of Thomas G. Hayden. Mrs Hayden was born October 18, 1931, in Pawcatuck, Conn., daughter of Isabella and Ernest Schwam.

She was an active member of Christ the King Lutheran Church in Newtown, where she taught Sunday school, organized suppers and tag sales, and played the organ.

For most of her professional career she was a registered nurse, retiring as the assistant supervisor of the operating room in Greenwich Hospital in 1962 to marry and raise a family. She loved reading and served on the Brookfield Public Library board when the town’s new library was built in the 1970s. She was also an avid gardener who earned the title of certified master gardener through study and community service.

Besides her husband of 49 years, she leaves three sons, Matthew, and his wife Beth Buchanan, Douglas, and Andrew, and his wife Ikue Suzuki; two grandchildren; and a brother.

A memorial service will take place at The Hearth at Southbury, 655 Main Street South, Southbury, at 1 pm, Saturday, January 21.
