Newtown High Schoolâs softball team saw its season come to a disappointing end in the quarterfinal round of the Class LL state tournament at Fitch on June 6. The Nighthawks, the tenth seed in the tourney, lost 1-0 to second-seeded Fitch as the home team plated an unearned run on a throwing error in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Fitch starter Cayla Sampson pitched the first two innings and the Nighthawks had their best chance to score in the opening frame. Newtown couldnât capitalize on a second and third, no-out situation and were held to only two hits in the game as Aubrey Latham pitched five hitless innings of relief.
This marked the third straight year in which the Nighthawks advanced to the third round of the state bracket. Newtown ended the season with a 17-7 overall record (13-2 in the South-West Conference.
