NICE Now On Twitter

The Newtown International Center for Education (NICE) has started a Twitter account, @NICENewtown

An announcement about the account read, “With the rapid expansion of NICE, its exploding opportunities, and all of the great progress to share, you can follow and stay informed throughout the school year!”

“… Follow on your phone, your iPad, your computer, and other devices. This will be a smart, efficient, effective way to bring all stakeholders together including students, alumni, the NICE team, teachers, delegates traveling abroad, and the NICE [Parent Community Organization] PCO.”

NICE Program Director and Newtown High School Assistant Principal Jason Hiruo said the new Twitter account is an efficient way to connect the community with NICE.

The account will keep the NICE team informed of updates immediately, he said, remind students of upcoming deadlines or activities, and will allow the community to follow along on the program’s different endeavors.

“We also provide educational information that many will find interesting and educational as it relates to culture, language, international understanding, and the importance of this for the future of our students,” said Mr Hiruo.

Mr Hiruo said he initiated the Twitter account to “promote greater use of technology and communication between the NICE team members. However, we grew to acknowledge that it is a tremendous resource to all stakeholders. The NICE team project leaders will be taking this over as it relates to their own work on Spain, Italy, France, India, China, and Japan.”

Tweets will also be sent out to remind community members of free workshops when they are scheduled, according to Mr Hiruo.

“The students will have a very active role in the tweets and relaying information to their peers,” he said. “Our student ambassadors will report updates to the NICE team, which will be directly put out through our Twitter account. This will also demonstrate the magnitude of student investment, participation, and contribution to the community and NICE program.”

With NICE alumni venturing out through the world, Mr Hiruo said the account will be one more way for the students to stay connected.

“They have formed strong ties to the program, value its worth, and have developed very memorable friendships with peers heading off in all directions of the world,” he said.

Students at Newtown’s sister schools have also requested a Twitter account be established, Mr Hiruo said, for them to stay connected as well.
