Leon Barkman To Speak At AMC Meeting

BETHEL — Leon Barkman of Newtown will present a slide show and talk on “Hiking In the Swiss Alps” to the Appalachian Mountain Club at the Fairfield County Agriculture Center in Bethel on Wednesday, October 12.

Mr Barkman is a long-time AMC leader who has hiked and led groups around the country, and particularly in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. He was one of the first people to complete the 2,100-mile hike of the famous Appalachian Trial from Georgia to Maine.

His presentation is a compilation of two recent trips to Pontresina and Wengen in the Swiss Alps.  Wengen is the site of the Eiger, Monch, and Jungfrau Mountains, and the Eiger is famous for its North Face, which has been the topic of numerous adventure books and Clint Eastwood’s Eiger Sanction.

AMC members and non-members are welcome to attend. The social hour with wine, cheese and appetizers begins at 6:30 pm, and the talk and slide presentation at 7:30. Coffee and dessert will follow the presentation at 8:30 with time available for questions or discussion with Leon.

The cost is $5 for members and $6 for non-members. Bringing along an appetizer or dessert is optional but would be appreciated.

Fairfield County Agriculture Center is on Route 6 in Bethel, across from Stony Hill Golf Center and conveniently located midway between I-84 exits 8 and 9.  No reservations are necessary.
