By Golly, That’s A Good Lolli

By Cathy Urfer

Hawley School Student Council is having a lollipop sale for the second year running. It is going through February 5 to February 13. This fund is for Joey Eckler, an 11-year-old boy who lives in Newtown with a brain tumor that was diagnosed at a young age. The money that we raise will help support his surgery.

We have about 900 lollipops, and we are hoping to raise about $500 for Joey. Each lollipop is a dollar each. Also if you buy five we’ll give you one FREE!

We are selling big hearts and lips for the lollipops this year. It will be tons of fun and it’s for a good cause too.

So come on down and be able to say: By Golly, That’s a Good Lolli!

Fifth Grade Students New Teacher

By Heleyna Conrad

At Hawley School, fifth grade class members aren’t just being taught all the time. In fact they have some teaching to do themselves.

Once every other week fifth grade students walk in a line down to the computer lab where they meet their “buddies.” Students help first graders use the computers. Adding, subtracting, writing, and drawing are some of the activities they do.

It is no mystery why they call this computer buddies. Most first grade students would consider their buddy a good friend of theirs. The fifth graders are definitely looked up to by these youngsters and are especially good role models.

There is one thing that we can learn from this, even kids can be looked up to and even the ones that are taught can teach others.

Gym Activities

By Katy Caulfield

Student of the Week is a new activity in Hawley School’s gym class this year. It is when gym teachers Mr Michlovitz and Mr Sortino will be picking two children from each grade (3-5) to be able to have a chance to be the Student of the Week.

Student of the Week is decided on the child’s ability to follow directions, participate actively in class, win and lose graciously, and always respect the gym equipment and other students. Mr Michlovitz said that he thought up the idea of Student of the Week to recognize those that displayed good sportsmanship. “Student of the Week is someone who is recognized for showing good sportsmanship and always trying their best in class,” he says. If you are chosen for Student of the Week, you get to pick the activity or game that the class plays during PE. Recently, Meaghan Brophy, in Mr Wilkinson’s fifth grade class, was chosen to be the Student of the Week. She picked jailbreak dodge ball for the activity of the day.

Also, a couple weeks ago, the old gym down in the basement of Hawley School was renovated. Mr Michlovitz says, “I think the old gym being re-used helps Hawley because there won’t be any more double classes.” It is true that the “new” gym is avoiding the double classes that the children had to do sometimes in the past. So with the Student of the Week and the old gym that was renovated, gym class looks like it is headed towards a great new year.

Rocking Regions

By Walter Murphy

There are some pretty cool projects being assigned in Mrs Trew’s class and the students are working diligently to finish them. They are researching the regions of the United States of America. They choose the format for their project’s presentation. I think they are doing a good job.

After interviewing Lisa Vendel, Nick Tramontozzi, and Jacob Ansari, I determined that this third grade class is studying hard on their subjects as the mid-term reports draw near. I think that they will all get good grades on their projects.

All About Art

By Cathy Urfer

Mrs Sheskin, the Hawley School art teacher, has a whole lot of work to do, so this year, who helps her finish it? Her “Art Crew” of course! Whether it’s sharpening pencils to mixing paints, they’re there to help her! They are Jaquelin Kirol, Chrissy Lachner, Holly Hayes, and Cathy Urfer. They’re there every morning to help!

Also new to Mrs Sheskin this year, is her artist birthday board. It lists the name of the artist, and their birthday. The Hawley students also learn some of the artist’s life information. This month’s artist is Paul Cézanne. Well, Happy Birthday, Paul!
