‘Altered Images’ — An Exhibition Of Photographs By Lawrence Murphy

WILTON — Digitally altered photographic prints are the highlight of Wilton Library’s current exhibition, “Altered Images.”

Lawrence Murphy, the owner of Magtype Graphic Services in Stratford, has been involved in digital imaging as a part of his business and has naturally made it a part of his avocation as well. Mr Murphy says that his show of more than 55 prints combines “the art of photography in concert with the art of giclée printmaking and computer technology.”

The word giclée is French for “sprayed ink” or “little squirt.” The process is used to produce high quality, permanent reproductions.

According to Stanislav Tsiperson of Art Collection Group: “The extra-fine image resolution possible in this printing process permits retention of a high degree of fine detail from the original image, rendering deeply saturated colors having a broad range of tonal values.”

Mr Murphy’s photographs capture relaxing floral and scenic prints along with a number of abstracts. The prints will be available for sale with a portion of the proceeds benefiting the library.

Mr Murphy and Irene, his wife of 52 years, split their time between their homes in Stratford and Tenants Harbor, Me., where many of the prints in the exhibition originated. Mr Murphy’s work strikes an interesting contemporary balance to the Russian realism art show, “Tradition in Modern Times: Russian Art 1959-2004,” that is exhibiting concurrently at Wilton Library.

“Altered Images” will remain on view through the end of February.

Wilton Library is in Wilton Center at 137 Old Ridgefield Road. For more information, call 203-762-3950.
