Program Review Panel

Slates Public Hearings

HARTFORD — The Legislative Program Review and Investigations Committee of the Connecticut General Assembly will be conducting public hearings around the state in the next two weeks on two topics: the Medicaid eligibility determination process; and mixing populations in state elderly housing.

The committee, chaired by State Senator Joseph Crisco and State Representative Julia Wasserman, is charged with performing program evaluations to assist the state legislature in its oversight function. Currently, the committee is reviewing the areas of Medicaid eligibility determination process and mixing populations in state elderly housing.

The Medicaid study is focusing on the Department of Social Services (DSS) implementation of the application and eligibility determination process for the Medicaid program. The study will determine how state employee layoffs, early retirements, and DSS restructuring have impacted the administration of eligibility determination for the program.

The housing study is focusing on the state policy of mixing nonelderly disabled persons and elderly persons in state-funded housing projects. Specifically, it is focusing on problems arising between elderly and nonelderly disabled tenants as well as exploring the options and alternatives.

The following public hearings are scheduled for these two studies:

Thursday, September 23, 4 pm, Legislative Office Building, Room 2D, Hartford.

Tuesday, September 28, 5 to 8 pm, Rose City Senior Center, 8 Mahan Drive, Norwich.

Wednesday, September 29, 4 to 7 pm, Danbury City Hall, Council Chambers, 155 Deer Hill Avenue, Danbury.

Thursday, September 30, 5 to 8 pm, Miller Memorial Central Library, Thornton Wilder Hall, 2901 Dixwell Avenue, Hamden.

Copies of committee staff-prepared briefing reports on these topics may be obtained by calling the committee staff offices. After Monday, September 27, these reports should also be available on the committee website, www.cga.state.ct.us/pri , under “Studies.”

People interested in testifying at any one of these hearings may sign up beginning one hour before the start of each hearing.
