The United Way Begins Campaign

BRIDGEPORT — Newtown resident Mark. A. Fries, chairman of the United Way of Eastern Fairfield County fund-raising campaign, will announce the 2000 campaign on Thursday, September 14, as the Day of Caring takes place throughout Connecticut.

Mr Fries is senior vice president at Beardsley, Brown and Bassett in Bridgeport.

Since 1992, Day of Caring has become a United Way tradition. Volunteers spend a day at the locations of various nonprofit agencies, painting, gardening, and landscaping.

In Newtown, volunteers from Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceutical and GE Capital Equipment, working through the United Way of Northern Fairfield County, will work at the Family Counseling Center and at Datahr Rehabilitation Institute group homes on Ridge Road and Old Hawleyville Road.

Employees from the Connecticut Light & Power Company (CL&P) will spend the day working outdoors clearing brush and planting perennials at the Women’s Shelter located at 2 West Street in Danbury.

“The Day of Caring is a popular event for our employees and an excellent opportunity to become involved in providing necessary assistance to our communities,” said Bill Stax, general manager for the Danbury/New Milford District.
