NFA Annual Meeting Is Tuesday—

Plant Whisperer To Speak (Out Loud And In Person)

By Dottie Evans

Those attending the Newtown Forest Association’s annual meeting and membership drive scheduled Tuesday, May 17, at the Fireside Inn on South Main Street, at 7 pm, should have no problem hearing scheduled speaker Lisa Durant, even though she calls herself “The Plant Whisperer.”

She will be talking in a normal tone of voice on a topic she knows well — growing perennials in the home garden.

Ms Durant is a resident of Thomaston, a certified master gardener, and a recent garden columnist for the Danbury News-Times. The topic of her power point talk will be “The Use of Annuals and Perennials in the Home Landscape,” and her presentation will include a number of her own photographs. Her specialty is incorporating herbaceous perennials and flowering bulbs into landscape designs.

The annual meeting begins at 7 pm with hors d’oeuvres and a social time. Then a brief report by the officers and directors will outline last year’s activities. Plans for the 2005-06 year will also be presented and followed by the evening’s speaker.

The Newtown Forest Association (NFA) is the oldest private land trust in the State of Connecticut and a 501(c)(3) charitable not-for-profit organization. It is not a town or municipal entity, but is considered a private landowner.

Since its formation in 1924, the NFA has served to protect more than 1,000 acres within Newtown that have been donated or deeded by easement, and permanently set aside from future development.

These preserved properties include streams, wetlands, woodlands, and fields and many offer spectacular views of Newtown’s landscape. They also serve to preserve the natural resources of Newtown for the perpetual benefit of its native plant and wildlife species.

Anyone wishing to join the Newtown Forest Association and to support its mission of preserving land in Newtown should mail in the attached membership/renewal application form. Or attend Tuesday’s annual meeting, and do it in person.
