The Rocking Rooster Square Dance Club — which draws dancers from Danbury, Bethel, Newtown, New Milford, Brookfield, Southbury, Watertown, Waterbury, and other surrounding towns — has three events planned in September.

Square dancing is a fun and healthy social activity that can be enjoyed by all ages. The local club is hoping to attract new dancers, and those who have done square dancing in the past. No experience is needed to participate in any of the events.

Square Dance Beginner Fun Nights are planned for Tuesdays, September 10 and 17. They will run from 7:30 until 9:30 each week, at Christ the King Lutheran Church, 85 Mt Pleasant Road.

Dress is casual. Singles and couples are welcome for the lively evening of fun, laughter and socializing while dancing to recorded music and a live caller.

Learn to Square Dance: Beginner Lessons will be offered on Tuesdays beginning September 24, also at the church. Singles and couples are also welcome at the lessons, which will continue weekly through mid-April.

Cost for the lessons is $5 per night. At the end of the series of lessons, dancers will be certified at the Mainstream Level.

“The graduates can then dance at any Mainstream dance, anywhere in the world,” according to Ron Baldwin, spokesperson for the club. “Square dancing is popular in many countries in Europe and Asia, especially Germany, Sweden, and Japan. Square dancing is always called in English throughout the world.”

There are 68 calls in the Mainstream program, Mr Baldwin explained. Each call is taught for several weeks so that dancers who miss a lesson or two can catch up with the group.

Learning is progressive and once a call has been learned it becomes part of the repertoire.

“We don’t stop dancing after graduation but continue on with workshops, refining the dancers’ skills and teaching new calls so that by summer they are able to dance at the Plus level,” he added. “The Tuesday night dances have a club feel to them. Most of the club members ‘angel’ the lessons and workshops so that the new graduates are seamlessly integrated into the club.”
