NHS Track Participants Race, Throw In Open And NE Meets
Newtown High School’s girls’ and boys’ track and field team members participated in the State Open on June 3, and in the New England championships on June 8 — both at Willow Brook Park in New Britain.
In the Open, Newtown’s girls’ squad placed 16th with 17 points, and the boys placed 39th with four points. Bloomfield earned first in both competitions.
Jenna Calandro earned second place in the pole vault event, with an 11-foot-6 vault for eight points. Amy Anyoha was fourth in the discus competition with a throw of 122-06. Micaela Nowacki was sixth in the discus throw with a 109-09 for three more NHS points. Reagan Cerney came in eighth in the 400 meter dash in a time of 58.14 to earn one point. Jake Feinstein placed fifth in the 3200 in a time of 9:27.39 to score four points.
In the New England competition, Calandro was runner-up in the pole vault event (12-03) and Feinstein placed third in the 3200 (9:12.18). Feinstein’s time was a personal best and lowered his high school record by more than a second.
Anyoha and Nowacki were ninth and 17th, respectively, in the discus event, with throws of 116-04 and 106-06.
Calandro and Feinstein both qualified for the New Balance Nationals in Greensboro, NC, June 14-16.
