Meghan O’Connor of Newtown recently graduated with a degree in theatre from Grinnell College. She received the Mortar Board Award. Miss O’Connor is the daughter of Michael and Janice Phelan O’Connor.

Newtown High School Culinary Arts teacher Tom Zmuda will be spending a week at Egg and I Pork Farm in New Milford. A grant from the Connecticut Business and Industry Association has made it possible for Mr Zmuda to focus on areas ranging from barns to the fabrication of meats to retail. He will use this experience to develop course work for students at the high school that would include meat fabrication, meat preservation, cooking various cuts appropriately, and presentation of dishes.

Jennifer Chion

Jennifer C. Chion was awarded a bachelor of science degree from the College of Health Sciences of Quinnipiac University. Miss Chion is now working as an x-ray tech at Milford – Orange Orthopedics. She is a 1997 graduate of Newtown High School.

Alberto Chau of Newtown received a degree from the University of New Haven on May 26 from the Executive M.B.A. Program.

Marc Nespoli

Marc P. Nespoli graduated with a Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Vermont College of Medicine on May 20. He is the son of Mr and Mrs Lou Nespoli of Newtown. Mr Nespoli was the recipient of the William Sweetser Award for Excellence in Psychiatry. He will be a resident doctor at Boston University Hospital.

Sarah McLoughlin, an English major, was named to the dean’s list at Muhlenberg College for the spring semester. She is the daughter of Mr and Mrs Peter McLoughlin of Newtown and is a graduate of Newtown High School.

Karina Wolfe of Sandy Hook has been named to the spring semester dean’s list at Marywood University. She is vice president of the Music Therapy Club and first violinist and librarian of the university orchestra. Miss Wolfe is also a member of the cross-country team and the concert choir. She is a music therapy major and the daughter of Val and Sue Wolfe. She is a 1998 graduate of Newtown High School.

Nicholas Antonopoulos

Nicholas John Antonopoulos, son of Mr and Mrs John Antonopoulos of Newtown, graduated from Worcester Polytechnic Institute with a bachelor of science degree in chemical engineering.

Jonathan S. Winton of Sandy Hook recently graduated from New Hampshire College with a bachelor of science degree in business administration.

Rhoda K. Tamakloe, daughter of Mr and Mrs Nelson S. Tamakloe of Sandy Hook, earned honors for the spring term at Phillips Exeter Academy.

Shannon Bell, who last week completed eighth grade at the Newtown Middle School, has been named as both a recipient of the Presidential Award for Educational Excellence and a Middle School Scholar. The Presidential Award recognizes students who have earned academic averages that place them in the top 25 percent of the class. The Middle School Scholar designation indicates students who achieve the highest 25 academic averages in the eighth grade.
