Auditions Available For Norwalk Youth Symphony

NORWALK — The Norwalk Youth Symphony is currently accepting applications for students entering grades 5-12 in the fall who wish to audition for its 2005-06 season. The symphony’s 50th anniversary kick-off will take place on April 7, 2006.

Auditions will run from August 27 through September 6 with different instruments playing on different days. They will be held at Norwalk City Hall, 125 East Avenue in Norwalk. The application deadline is July 1, and there is a non-refundable application fee of $15.

Norwalk Youth Symphony (NYS) is comprised of approximately 250 students from 21 towns throughout Fairfield, New Haven, Litchfield and Westchester counties, including members this year from Newtown and Sandy Hook.

The program includes four orchestras: Prelude, a string orchestra for those who are often getting their first orchestral experience; Interlude, a more advanced string orchestra that serves as preparation for entry into the full symphony orchestra; Concert Orchestra, a full orchestra playing on an intermediate level; and Principal Orchestra, the most advanced orchestra, playing demanding repertoire.

Prelude and Interlude rehearse for two hours and Concert and Principal rehearse for three hours every Saturday morning from mid-September through mid-May.

There are three concerts throughout the season. In addition, there are opportunities for extra enrichment through the NYS Chamber Music Program where participants in chamber ensembles at all different levels receive 11 hours of coaching each semester, culminating in two recitals.

This year, NYS is also adding an intensive Brass Training Program for players at all levels, which includes sectionals twice a month, master classes and workshops, and the incorporation of a brass ensemble into our Chamber Music Program. Please note that participation in one of the orchestras is not a requirement for enrollment in either the Chamber or Brass Programs.
