Oil Painting Demo At Meeting House, January 14

The Society of Creative Arts of Newtown (SCAN) will host Charles Ray of Redding, painting in oil at the next meeting of SCAN on Wednesday, January 14, at 7:30 pm. His subject will be still life including drapery and the demonstration will take place in the Newtown Meeting House (lower level) on Main Street at the flagpole.

Admission is free.

Mr Ray’s current work focuses on images in nature painted primarily on site in the Northeast: landscapes of serene clouds, rolling shadowed hills, or bodies of water. Themes include sunrises and sunsets. He derives energy from the sunrise, getting a whole new start every day. Prior to his shift to landscape, his paintings were created in the studio and were mostly figurative or still life.

Charles Ray retired a few years ago as the director at Silvermine School of the Arts in New Canaan, a position he held since 1993. In addition he taught painting and drawing at Silvermine School for many years and is a Silvermine Guild Artist member. Mr Ray graduated from the Hartford Art School and studied at Yale School of Art.

Mr Ray has had numerous one-person shows and has been in group and museum shows throughout Connecticut, New York and neighboring states. In addition he has been commissioned for many corporate and private portraits. Presently he is teaching at Rowayton Art Center and in addition has private students.
