School Enrollment Projections Revised Downward

The Board of Finance joined the Board of Education at its December 5 meeting to discuss enrollment projections provided by the State of Connecticut and Bothwell Consulting Associates. Bothwell has revised its numbers downward by 115 students, estimating an enrollment of 2,022 in 2014-15, calculating for a high projection. Utilizing numbers for a medium growth scenario, an enrollment of 1,903 was projected.

Contained in these calculations are the projected number of new housing permits. Bothwell’s numbers reflect an average of 50 new building permits yearly. Board of Education member Tom Gissen presented research he had done looking at data for the past four decades. His numbers show an average of 130 new homes yearly since 1960.

Debate between the boards ensued over the numbers presented, if acreage cited was buildable lots or all available land, discrepancies between the numbers compiled by the two boards, and current real estate trends.
