Menâs singles and doubles and mixed doubles entries top the 2001 Newtown Open draw as 52 men are entered in three different singles categories, 22 menâs doubles teams in three levels are entered, and 24 mixed doubles teams are entered. Draw sheets were mailed last week and first-round play for those who did not receive byes must be played by Sunday (it is up to the competitors to play by the dates listed on the draw sheets).
Akash Lamba will be defending his title and will be playing with another finalist, Ritush Venugopal (seeded second) in the menâs open doubles. Newtownâs own Bob Elliott is seeded third in singles and second in menâs doubles with Owen Robertson of Brookfield.
Mariano Moran is seeded first in the menâs 40 singles with Carl Bailey seeded second. The two are a team and seeded first in the menâs 40 doubles with Steve Owens and Chris Radford seeded second. In the menâs 55 singles, Ferd Starbuck is seeded first and Dom Nocturne is seeded second. Mr Starbuck will be joined by Billy Starbuck to play in menâs 55 doubles.
Shirley Avril and Randy Saâadeh are seeded first in the mixed doubles while Gene and Lorraine Chappell are seeded second.
Debra Eddy and Donna Svendsen are seeded first and second in womenâs open singles while Ms Avril and Julie Sanderude are seeded first in womenâs open doubles with Nicole Lecher and Gail OâKoniewski are seeded second.
Jana Berry and Kristin McNiff will be seeded first and second, respectively, in the womenâs 40 singles while Susan Arconti and Joyce Lee are seeded first in the womenâs 40 doubles ahead of second-seeded Loretta Bohnen and Denise Dougiello.
Coordinators for the events and the persons that should receive the results of each match are Bob Gabor and John Klopfenstein for the top and bottom of the menâs singles draw; Dom Nocturne for the menâs 40 singles; Gene Bernard for the menâs 55 singles and doubles; Gil Fong for the menâs open doubles; Lorraine Chappell for the menâs 40 doubles; Hugh and Jan Lavery for mixed doubles; Diane Gucciardo for womenâs open singles; Gene Chappell for womenâs 40 singles; Liz Lynch for womenâs open doubles; and George Dzujna for womenâs 40 doubles.
Semi-finals and finals will be played on Saturday and Sunday, June 9 and 10, at Dickinson Park. If it rains, matches will be scheduled for Beaver Brook Tennis Club. To keep abreast of the tournament progress, the draw will eventually be posted and updated on the NTA web site at www.ntaweb.com.
