Football, Soccer, And Swim Teams Earn Wins

Newtown High School’s football team went on the road and blanked Pomperaug of Southbury 42-0 in the season opener, on September 11.

In other opening day action, on September 11, Newtown’s girls’ soccer team scored a 3-2 win over New Fairfield, at Treadwell Park, and the girls’ swimming and diving team defeated visiting Joel Barlow of Redding 97-80.

The boys’ soccer team dropped a 3-1 decision at New Fairfield.

In the football game, the Nighthawks erupted for 35 first-half points. Ethan Carpenter got the scoring started with a 41-yard punt return for six. A Ben Mason interception led to Jared Pearson’s eight-yard TD run.

Quarterback Justin connected with Carpenter for a five-yard scoring strike and a 21-0 cushion through one quarter of play. Hunter Cobb found the end zone twice in the second quarter; he had a 25-yard catch and run for a score set up by a Michael Doyle block, and added a 19-yard TD run.

Pearson caught a 35-yard scoring strike from Dunn in the third quarter. Colin McCafferty had an interception in the fourth quarter.

The Hawk gridders return to action on Friday, September 18, when Notre Dame-Fairfield heads to Blue & Gold Stadium for a 7 pm kickoff.

On the soccer pitch, the NHS girls earned their win thanks to Sarah Houle’s last-minute net-finder.

The girls will visit Brookfield at 6 pm on Tuesday, September 15, and will return home to take on Bunnell of Stratford on Thursday, September 17, when the Bulldogs come to Treadwell Park for a 3:45 pm start.

The boys’ soccer team will try to bounce back when Brookfield visits Treadwell on September 15; game time is set for 3:45 pm.

Newtown’s swim team will have some time off from competition and will visit Weston on September 25, beginning at 4 pm.
