Janice Nye Burroughs died June 11 in the Bridgeport Hospital ICU.
She is survived by a son, Stephen Burroughs, of Newtown, and her daughter, Nanci, with whom she lived in Easton. She is also survived by her sister, Marcia Sarvis; her sister-in-law, Bette Rohr; and many nieces and nephews.
Mrs Burroughs was born in Bridgeport and raised in Waterbury, graduating from Crosby High School. She worked for a short time at Waterbury Savings Bank. After moving to Stratford, she joined the Sterling Ski Club where she met and married Sanford Burroughs. She worked for six years at Bridgeport City Trust before becoming a homemaker and mother.
Before his death, she and her husband had 42 happy years of skiing, sailing, camping, square dancing. and traveling. Mrs Burroughs was proud of the fact that she had visited all 50 of the United States, as well as Mexico, Canada, England, Scotland, Wales, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland, Russia, France, and Switzerland. She was both a Girl Scout leader and a 4H Equestrian Club leader, and was very supportive of her daughterâs horse show competitions. She eventually returned to banking and worked at both Union Trust and Connecticut Bank and Trust.
Over many years as a member of the Parish of Christâs Church, she taught Sunday school, sang in the choir, and served on the Vestry and Altar Guild. A charter member of the Easton Historical Society, she also served many years on the Board of Directors, and chaired many events. Mrs Burroughs was a member of the Nye Family Association of America and loved attending family reunions at the Homestead in East Sandwich, Mass.
A funeral service was held on Thursday, June 16, at Christ Episcopal Church, Easton. Cremation followed at Charter Oak Crematory, Oxford.
