Book Sale Features New Categories

By Nancy K. Crevier

“It’s a new sale every year,” exclaimed Friends of the C.H. Booth Library Book Sale volunteer Toni Earnshaw. “Even the year around [book] sorters, some of whom have been doing the sorting for all of the 36 years [of the book sale], are frequently astonished by what comes through our doors,” said Ms Earnshaw.

The 36th Annual Friends of the C.H. Booth Library Book Sale will take place this year from Saturday, July 9, through Wednesday, July 13, at the Reed Intermediate School, 3 Trades Lane. More than 120,000 books, CDs, DVDs, and LPs, will be available for purchase at bargain prices. Admission of $5 is charged only on Saturday. Monday is half-price day; Tuesday is $5-a-bag day; and on Wednesday, all remaining items are free.

This year may prove to be the biggest yet for the sale, said Ms Earnshaw, with donations flooding the library, especially since the Book Donation Day held in May.

One of the goals of the Friends is to keep the book sale fresh each year. “We always try to improve our offerings,” Ms Earnshaw said. “This year, we have added some new categories,” she said. Most of the new categories are designed to appeal to young readers, including those in their 20s. “Teens” is a new category of fiction and nonfiction for the teen years. “Tweens” focuses on fiction and non-fiction for readers between the ages of 10 and 14. “Style” is the new category aimed at the early-20s group. “This is a fun selection of fashion, entertaining, interior decorating, and etiquette books,” Ms Earnshaw said.

The book sale has received a great number of graphic novels and manga (a Japanese genre of cartoons and comic books, usually with a science-fiction or fantasy theme) in very good condition. These are books that should attract young adults, said Ms Earnshaw, particularly young men.

“Our children’s book section is organized by reading levels,” she said, a rather unusual undertaking for a large book sale. Generous donations of children’s books will give shoppers much to choose from, she said.

In addition, the Friends are pleased to offer a good number of art books this year. “We received a significant donation of very good quality, some gift quality, art books that include the Impressionists, popular American artists such as Andrew Wyeth, Whistler, and Georgia O’Keefe, and many others,” said Ms Earnshaw.

Readers of historical fiction will find that genre in its own category, as well, said Ms Earnshaw.

Back by popular demand this year is the “Unique Table,” a collection of items that do not fall into any of the other categories. “It’s a fascinating potpourri of items, including charming and unusual gift items,” Ms Earnshaw said.

The Friends are proud to announce this year the dedicated website, www.boothbooksale.org, where all of the information about the book sale can be found, as well as a $1-off coupon for Saturday admission.

“There is a lot that is new this year,” said Ms Earnshaw, so whether this is the first time or the 36th time buyers have been to the huge sale, there is certain to be something tempting on a table.
