Dear Mountain,
             Dear Mountain,
The year goes by,
The day is here,
When Valentines are written.
With your black fur
And handsome face,
No wonder I am smitten.
Â
Your words flow easy
From your pen;
Your column is just fine.
So show your face
For all to see;
Mr sweet, sweet Valentine.

My dear Tiger Baby, I would show my face, but Iâm blushing right now. I also have the rather awkward duty to tell you that this year you have some competition. I got a lovely Valentineâs Day card from Tesh Maki, a beautiful black cat who even sent me her picture.
Thank you both, Tiger Baby and Tesh, for making this Valentineâs Day the best one ever.
At last weekendâs Legislative Council meeting, Newtown resident Richard Sturdevant didnât win too many Valentine points. He stood up to speak during the public participation portion of the agenda. Before speaking on the issue, he promised to talk slowly so that the council clerk could keep up. The council clerk happens to be Marie Sturdevant, Richardâs wife.
I donât know whether itâs because the big romantic day is approaching or not, but First Selectman Herb Rosenthal is sporting a new, short haircut this week. Herb says his new look evolved when he was chatting with his hairdresser and she just kept cutting. Although Herbâs wife, Michelle, isnât sure she likes his new image, he says a short haircut means he wonât have to get it cut as frequently. âThatâs being fiscally responsible,â he pointed out.
By the way, if youâre in the first selectmanâs office this week, be sure to ask for a candy Valentine heart. There are always such nice sentiments coming from that place.
The Newtown Lions Club is holding a pancake breakfast this Saturday from 8 am to 1 pm at the Sandy Hook firehouse (the snow date is Sunday). Tickets are $5 for persons over 13, $2 for those under. Proceeds will benefit the fire companies and the Booth Library. And if youâre at all hungry by 6 pm, you can head on down to St Rose for the Churchâs âSpaghetti Gets You Ready⦠for Valentineâs Dayâ dinner. There will be door prizes and a Valentineâs raffle. This event is sponsored by the youth group at St Rose.
Bob Brand ran the gamut of emotional response for the townâs highway department recently. His mailbox was sent via airmail into a snow bank by a snowplow in the most recent snowstorm, which got him away from his computer for just long enough to lodge a complaint with the highway department. He figured heâd get the run-around, but he was pleasantly surprised by the courtesy shown to him on the phone. He was even happier when the highway crew showed up the next morning to replace the battered box.
