The Envy Of Europe

To the Editor,

As we enjoy a state tax reduction of 10 cents per gallon and politicians investigate recent price rises the Europeans must be envious.

In January 1999 the US Department of Transportation reported that the weighted average of state taxes plus federal tax was  $.37; for Europeans it was Belgium $2.50, France $2.67, Germany  $2.38, Italy  $2.55, Netherlands  $2.52,  and United Kingdom $2.93 based on prevailing exchange rates.
