Supporting Independence
Supporting Independence
To the Editor:
On May 3 the sun shone, despite all predictions, for the Fourth Annual Independent Living Day sponsored by Newtown Youth Services. Twenty work crews comprising over 90 volunteers raked, washed, and planted to help some Newtown seniors get their property into shape for spring. We had a wonderful day, but we couldnât have done it without the help of some very supportive people and groups.
Thanks to many churches, school organizations, merchants, Channel 17, the Senior Center, and The Newtown Bee for getting out the word about Independent Living Day. Thanks to Bagelman, Dunkinâ Donuts, Subway, and Big Y for continuing and much-appreciated support. Thanks to Lexington Gardens and Shaverâs Nursery for those cheerful flowers; they spread joy to those who received and those who planted. Thanks to Wendy Leon-Gambetta for a tasty breakfast that fueled our work. Thanks to all the parent and high-school drivers who transported our crews and worked alongside them; this day would have been impossible without you.
Special thanks to the staff of Newtown Youth Services for tireless devotion, assistance, and support. And a very special thanks to Carol Smiley, past coordinator of Independent Living Day, for generously giving her time, her energy, and her prayers. Finally, thanks to all our youth who came, worked hard, and made a difference. Letâs do it again next year!
