Louise J. McAvoy
Louise J. McAvoy, 79, a longtime teacher in the Newtown School System, died October 25 in Luther Woods Nursing Home, Hatboro, Penn. Mrs McAvoy was the wife of the late John J. McAvoy and lived in Sandy Hook from 1950 until 1990 and in Heritage Village, Southbury, until she moved to Willow Grove, Penn., to live with her son.
She was born in New York, N.Y., March 12, 1920, daughter of the late George and Clara (Cors) Lambert. She received her bachelorâs degree from Hunter College in New York and her masterâs degree from New York University. She started teaching in Newtown first as a kindergarten teacher and subsequently was appointed as Newtownâs first speech/language/hearing specialist. Mrs McAvoy retired in 1990. For many years she was active in the Newtown Town Players, a local community theater group, as an actress and director.
She is survived by one son, John J. McAvoy of Willow Grove, Penn., and one grandson, Scott McAvoy. She was predeceased by two daughters, Joanne and Patricia McAvoy.
Funeral services were held October 28, from the Honan Funeral Home, 58 Main Street, Newtown, and at St Rose of Lima Church for a Mass of Christian Burial. Interment was in St Rose Cemetery.
