New Bluebird Trail Set Up At Brookfield Nature Center

Brookfield — In conjunction with Stephanie Landis of Brookfield Conservation Commission, a team of Wild Birds Unlimited staff and volunteers recently set up a new bluebird trail at Brookfield Nature Center. The trail is dedicated to the memory of Robert C. Tymon, a nature enthusiast who especially enjoyed an interest in bluebirds.

Brookfield Nature Center is on Route 133, just east of the pull-off for The Harry Gursky Open Space parking area.

Eastern bluebirds, a favorite for many local birdwatchers, are a beautiful example of how conservation efforts can make a difference. Preferring a habitat of open meadows and grasslands and subsisting predominantly on insects, bluebird populations plummeted during the 1900s due to habitat destruction, nest predation by invasive species, and pesticide use.

Since then, bird enthusiasts and conservationists have succeeded in providing sufficient housing and habitat to trigger an impressive comeback. With ongoing care and stewardship, it is hoped that bluebirds will continue to grace the eastern United States with their beautiful plumage and song.

Representing Wild Birds Unlimited were Phil Robbins and Paul Tignor. Bill and Joey Lounsbury also volunteered their time.

Wild Birds Unlimited is the largest birdfeeding retail franchise operating throughout the United States and Canada. The store in Brookfield, at 317 Federal Road (telephone 203-775-4888), is owned and operated by Margaret Robbins and her son Phil.
