Newtown High School's boys' volleyball team concluded the regular season with 3-0 (25-16, 25-13, 25-12) victory at Danbury in a rescheduled match on May 23. The win caps off an unbeaten season for the Nighthawks.

The Nighthawks will compete in the South-West Conference championship match on Friday, May 25. Newtown, the top seed, will host No. 2 Joel Barlow of Redding at 6 pm.

Ardi Kodzodziku had 15 kills, one ace, one block, eight digs, and nine service points; Robbie Morrill logged seven kills, an ace, eight digs, and nine service points; Silas Decker had seven kills, three digs, and 11 service points; and Morten Sande added six kills, four blocks, and two digs.

The Nighthawks defeated visiting Stamford 3-0 (25-12, 25-7, 25-8) on Senior Night, May 21.

Seniors and exchange student Sande from Norway who will not be with the team next year, played in two of the three sets in this match.

Jacob Duffy had two digs, two kills, two aces, and four service points. Nate Jones recorded six digs, two kills, five aces, and 17 service points. Tom Phaneuf logged three digs, nine kills, two aces, and seven service points. Liam Jones recorded 12 assists, three kills, two blocks, and service points. Sande had one dig, four kills, and two blocks. Decker had one dig, six kills, two blocks, three aces, and five service points. Matt Principi also contributed to the victory.

"I am so happy for the team that we went 17-0 in our regular season. To see the boys work so hard day in and day out to get an outcome of undefeated is a testament to the dedication each kid put into the program," Newtown Coach Sandy Doski said.

"The parents are so supportive of everything I do, it makes it a pleasure to coach their boys. With this being only our fourth year in the program, the seniors have come a long way, from just learning the sport to being top ranked second in the state is a huge accomplishment. We said from the beginning of the season, our goal was to win SWC and states and we are on track to do just that. We just have to play the way we know how and not worry about our competition," Doski added.

The Hawks know a thing or two about their competition in the SWC's pinnacle match. Newtown pulled out a pair of hard-fought five-game victories against the Falcons this season.

"Friday is a big game for us. Having beaten Barlow twice in the regular season, they are going to come out swinging. We really have to be mentally prepared and not go in thinking we are going to win again. They are going to get their kills, but so are we. We can't dwell on the mistakes but focus on the prize - winning the SWC," Doski said. "It is going to be a battle, but a battle that will be fantastic volleyball to watch. Win or lose on Friday, we will be coming into the match ready to play hard from the first whistle to the last."
