When Kyle Tobin was beaten by 1/10th of a second in the 110-meter high hurdles and the 100-meter dash crew was swept out of the event by Masuk, New Fairfield and Brookfield, it seemed as if the signs were not good for the Newtown High School boys’ track team.

Well, maybe the signs in those two events were not good, but the Nighthawks made up for it in the other 16 events on Monday afternoon and came up with three victories in their quad-meet to remain undefeated at 5-0-1.

“We are off to our best start ever under coach (Ed)_Obloj,”_said assistant coach Carl Paternoster. “We can’t be any more excited for the kids and for what it means to this program.”

The Nighthawks easily defeated Brookfield (117.5-32.5), Masuk (114-54), and New Fairfield (110-40) as they swept the three relay events while Jeff Heller (1,600- and 3,200-meters) and Matt Regan (shot put and discus) were double winners.

While it might have been a bit of a shock to some to see Tobin touched out at the finish line of the 110-meter high hurdles by Fellone of Brookfield, there was actually little damage done. Tobin took second at 16.2 and Tony Napoleone finished third at 18.1 seconds.

And despite the 100-meter dash runners being locked out of the scoring, just moments later the ‘Hawks saw Heller, Dan Phillips, and Chris DiNoto finish first, second and third in the 1,600-meter long distance run (Dan Maxwell finished fourth, as well, but out of the scoring) and a short time after that saw Dave Rod, Phillips and Maxwell finish first, second and third in the 800 meter run and Heller, Rod and DiNoto finish first, second and third in the 3,200-meter run.

“We got some great performances from all our kids today,” said coach Obloj, “but the distance kids really stepped it up. I_can’t be any prouder of this bunch. I’m thrilled with our results to this point.”

So, everything worked out okay – actually, a lot more than just okay because Pete Terrance (400 meters), Dave Rod (800 meters) and Steve Ambrogio (triple jump) were also individual winners for the ‘Hawks.

It was a dominating performance all around.

The ‘Hawks opened the season 2-0-1 in a quad meet against New Milford, Joel Barlow and Weston. The tie came against the Green Wave, which upped its record to 4-0-1 with wins over Pomperaug and Bethel on Monday.

Now, that is a good sign for the ‘Hawks, who saw New Milford and Pomperaug as their chief competition in the South-West Conference.

Next week, the ‘Hawks will look to keep their unblemished record alive when they travel to Stratford to take on Bunnell and Foran.

A week later, it will be a visit with Bethel, Immaculate and Stratford.

And that all leads to the season finale against Notre Dame, Pomperaug and Jonathan Law down in Milford.
