ALLENTOWN, Penn. â Left-hander Gregg Burkhart of Newtown, now a sophomore with the Muhlenberg College baseball team, was named pitcher of the week recently by the Centennial Conference
Burkhart was honored after striking out 13 and allowing only five hits in a nine-inning complete game win against Moravian. He gave up only one earned run and did not allow any hits after the fourth inning. Burkhart finished the game with a flourish, striking out the final five batters. His 13 Ks were the most by a Muhlenberg hurler since 1994.
In his next start, Burkhart pitched six strong innings to earn the win against Misericordia. After that win, he was 3-0 with a 1.54 ERA and a CC-leading 29 strikeouts in 231/3Â innings. The Mules were 9-4 at the time.
POUGHKEEPSIE, New York â Diana Perachio of Newtown, a sophomore captain with the Marist College womenâs tennis team, was 3-0 in her first three matches of the 2003 season. She racked up singles wins against Iona, Fairleigh Dickinson and Vermont. Against Iona and Vermont, she also added doubles wins.
Last year, Perachio took three out of four matches against some of the best competition in the eastern region at the Bucknell Invitational. She was victorious over Manhattan, Rider and Buffalo and went on to the Omni Hotels 2001 Eastern Regional Championship as one-half of the number one doubles team â which finished 11-3 for the Red Foxes.
Marist is 6-0 this year.
